In the first group stage game of the UEFA Europa League, Tottenham Hotspur easily turned over Dutch opposition PSV Eindhoven. Jermain Defoe bagged a brace in a 3-1 win for Spurs.
LONDON, England - Tottenham have had a mixed start to their league and cup campaigns, with their worse loss coming last week, to Dagenham & Redbridge in the Carling Cup. One man who hasn't been kept quiet though is Peter Crouch. He's scored 6 times this season already for his new club, and all of them were braces. Due to an injury picked up by Robbie Keane, the little and large combination of Defoe and Crouch start up-front, in the first game of the UEFA Europa League group stages. PSV Eindhoven were the visitors to White Hart Lane, and on paper, they didn't pose a threat. The European experience of Beckham, Van Der Vaart and Modric were more use than the youngsters Amrabat, Dzsudzsak and Marcellis at PSV.
Spurs were the more dominant team in the early goings, with no long balls going straight up to Peter Crouch, which was a good sign for the fans. Luka Modric was testing the PSV 'keeper numerous times from long range, and Isaksson, the ex-Man City 'keeper, did well to tip the Croatian midfielder's shot round the post on 13 minutes. Is was PSV's turn to attack next, with Lazovic going close woth a long range shot, but Ochoa wasn't tested by it.
PSV were playing poor football, not passing along the ground, and had no end product. Spurs however, were the complete opposite. They were playing slick football, and taking PSV to the max. David Beckham was playing out of his skin for Spurs, and was hacked down by Carlos Salcido next to the corner flag. No card was given, but he was getting lots of abuse from the angry Spurs fans. It was also surprising to see that Spurs weren't using the left side of the pitch more. Aaron Lennon and Nadir Belhadj are both fast players, and could outwit Jason Culina any second of the game. No goals came during the first half; fans expected the next 45 minutes to be better than the first.
And it looked like Harry Redknapp's team talk worked, as Spurs made the breakthrough on 51 minutes. Luka Modric made a breakaway from Edison Mendez, inside his own half, and played a lovely pinpoint ball down the middle of the pitch, catching out Brechet. The pacy Jermain Defoe reached the ball, and curled the ball round Isaksson, to send the Spurs fans into raptures. Crouch had taken all the plaudits in the season so far, because of his six goals, but Modric and Defoe definately deserved more praise, especially after that fabulous move.
It seemed like PSV were tired out due to the running of the Spurs players, but not all hope was lost in the game. Crouch struck an effort straight at Isaksson, after taking the ball off a confused Dirk Marcellis, and that's when PSV had their chance to break-away. Spurs pushed too many defenders forward for the attack, leaving Lazovic one-on-one with Guillermo Ochoa. Belhadj came over though, and took out Lazovic with his two feet hitting his ankle, which left the striker being stretchered off. There was only one thing the referee could do for a challenge like that; show Belhadj the red card. Lazovic's replacement was Danny Koevermans, but it was captain Timmy Simons who stepped up to take the penalty. Ochoa guessed the right way, but the ball flew into the top corner, and PSV had levelled the tie.
Despite equalising, the PSV team didn't resfresh, which led to Spurs getting back in the lead. Nordin Amrabat lost the ball to Michael Turner, and Wilson Palacios played a long ball over the top of the defence, which was reached onto by Crouch, and with just two touches of the ball, the 6'7 striker drilled the ball into the bottom corner, leaving Isaksson on his backside. After the goal, Crouch's afternoon came to an end, as he was replaced by Goran Pandev. Juan Mata was on for David Beckham, and Rafael Van Der Vaart replaced Luka Modric.
PSV got stronger though, but couldn't resist the pressure Spurs put on them. Mata volleyed over, missing a glorious chance from a Defoe cross, and Lennon could of smashed one in from 25 yards, but the post prevented him from making the score 3-1. PSV went all out attack, in search on an equaliser in stoppage time, but that created more chaos for them. Michael Turner was able to clear the ball away from a Simons long pass, and Pandev raced away down the right flank. He cut inside into the box, found Defoe, who was waiting to tuck the ball into the back of the net, grabbing his 2nd goal of the game. An easy win for Spurs, who scored three goals with 10 men, sending them top of the group table.
