LOL it is so many people say gyro wrong. Everything from guy-row, to year-row, to hi-row.

Yep, same here from another Missourian. Drives me nuts, and I hear it a lot around here.

So, coo-pon, yes?
I say "cue-pawn" but I have no problem with "coo-pawn" -- I think either is allowed (?). It's the "-pin" that gets me.

I hate when Valentine's Day becomes Valemtime's Day.

These two are my big ones. I still don't understand why people here find it necessary to put the s at the end of Des Moines. Also, not necessarily a mispronunciation, but one of my pet peeves is when someone will say "I seen him yesterday" instead of "I saw him yesterday." That absolutely drives me up a wall.

I have a relative who pronounces license as LICE - NESS. I had to piece together a conversation to actually figure out what she was saying, lol.

Re: Mispronounced Words: Tales of poor grammar

An example I found interesting awhile back that makes English one of the hardest languages to learn as a second language. Seven different ways to pronounce "ough":

though (like o in go)

through (like oo in too)

cough (like off in offer)

rough (like uff in suffer)

plough (like ow in flower)

ought (like aw in saw)

borough (like a in above)
