I think it could be Mookie Betts or Francisco Lindor, however I believe it should be Freeman or Ohtani!

Ohtani almost makes too much sense; he's got international appeal, he's a very good player, he's a two-way player (for now), and I haven't seen anybody have a negative thing to say about him as a person so there wouldn't be any blowback. All those reasons are exactly why they won't pick him, the studio will pick some big market player that is bound to anger the other 29 fan bases.

Let's not forget the player has to want to be on the cover too. We can't be sure Ohtani wants that in his portfolio. He should be their first ask, but we'll see if Shohei wanted to play along.

That is true and if his pick of the lesser market of the two LA teams is any indication, that might be all we need to see to know what he would say if asked.

Won't there likely be two cover athletes? One for the standard version and one for the special edition(s)? Last year it was Tatis and Robinson respectively. I think Otani is likely for the standard version, but I think they may go with a "legend" for the special edition again in 2022.

Although I would be okay with that, if it's a NY-based player, I suspect it is more likely to be Derek Jeter. Especially because if I'm not mistaken, there were no moments (or other DD exclusive things) related to Jeter as part of MLB 21.
