Canucks announce 2019-20 season roster

VANCOUVER, BC - The Vancouver Canucks have released its roster for the 2019-20 regular season, the team announced today. The 23-man roster includes 15 forwards, six defencemen and two goalies.

Out of the 23 players, 18 are returnees from last year’s team. The roster includes four free agent signings with Marcus Johansson, Tomas Nosek, Justin Bailey and Xavier Ouellet along with first overall pick Kent Stafford.

In a surprise move, the Canucks assigned forward Reid Boucher to Utica and recalled Justin Bailey last week. The move was to comply with the league’s salary cap minimum.

Canucks GM Nolan Reid is excited for the season to get underway.

“I am expecting another young squad that will be competitive and hard to play against. We are in the second year of a rebuild, but at the same time we added some keys to help develop a winning culture for the next years to come.”

The Canucks open the 2019-20 season on the road on Oct. 5 against the Sharks and will play four more road games before their home-opener on Oct. 17 against the Detroit Red Wings.

Canucks name Horvat captain

VANCOUVER, BC - Bo Horvat will dawn the ‘C’ for the Vancouver Canucks, the team announced today after practice.

Horvat becomes the 14th captain in franchise history. The native of London, Ont., was Vancouver’s ninth overall pick in 2013. Last season, Horvat finished second in team scoring with 18 goals and 52 points in 80 games.

“It’s an honour,” said Horvat. “It’s very humbling to be given this opportunity. I’m going to keep playing the way I do and be more vocal and lead by example.”

Canucks GM Nolan Reid explained the team held a meeting after practice where all the players took a team vote on captains.

“Horvat was by far the popular choice,” said Reid. “Bo will be the perfect candidate to help lead this team through this rebuild.”

In addition, forward Sven Baertschi and defenceman Ben Hutton will be full-time alternate captains.

The Canucks leave for San Jose today as they take on the Sharks tomorrow to open the new season.

October update

GM Nolan Reid on a 2-10-0 start: “I’m not concerned at all. We are a mostly young squad and you have to learn to lose before you learn to win. It’s only early in the season. Give it time, the wins will come. Besides our season opener, we’ve been in every game losing by a goal or two. If we stay patient, the breaks will eventually come our way.”
