Re: Los Angeles Kings (NHL 16 Be A GM)
Kings to meet Calgary in Round 2
Flames want vengeance against Los Angeles
April 27, 2017
LOS ANGELES - They led the Pacific Division for nearly the entire season. At the end of 2016, they were 11 points clear of the Los Angeles Kings. And yet, tomorrow night's Western Semifinal series between the Kings and Calgary Flames will take place in Southern California instead of southern Alberta, thanks to the Kings' surreal tear through the schedule in 2017, enabling them to eclipse the Flames and steal the Pacific crown at the end of the season.
These old Western foes have met five times previously in the playoffs, but none since 1993, Wayne Gretzky's first season in LA. The Flames had LA's number this year, taking four of the five meetings, two coming in shootouts. However, all five games took place before Christmas, when the Kings were still in their post-championship haze.
The Flames post a very steep challenge indeed, having finished with the 3rd best record in the NHL. While their offense was only average - 14th in scoring - the Flames boast the NHL's stingiest defense, surrendering only 182 goals on the season, five better than second-place Los Angeles. Calgary is led by an impressive array of young talent, headlined by "Johnny Hockey," Johnny Gaudreau. The diminutive sniper may only be 5'9, and 150 pounds is generous, but he has world-class speed and elite skill, to the tune of 83 points this season (34 G, 49 A). Following him in the Calgary lineup are franchise centers Sean Monahan and Sam Bennett. Drafted 6th overall in 2013 and 4th overall in 2014, respectively, Monahan and Bennett have panned out perfectly in the Flames' resurgence: the 22-year old Monahan has three straight 60-point seasons, with 26 goals and 39 assists this year, while Bennett followed up his rookie year of 2015/2016 (25 G, 34 A) with 21 goals and 40 assists this year for 61 points.
Calgary also boasts a tremendously talented top four defensemen in captain Mark Giordano, T.J. Brodie, Dougie Hamilton, and Dennis Wideman. Giordano was a dynamic offensive threat this season with 19 goals and 26 assists for 45 points, while Brodie and Hamilton posted identical 12-20-32 statlines. Between the pipes for the Flames will be 30-year old Karri Ramo of Finland, who also had an elite season: 39 wins to go with a 2.16 GAA and a .927 SV%.
In the first round, the Flames vanquished their Western Canadian rivals from Vancouver in six games. Sam Bennett led Calgary with eight points (2 G, 6 A) in the series, followed by five points each from Gaudreau and Michael Frolik, while Ramo shut the sturdy Canucks' offense down to the tune of a 2.10 GAA and a .922 SV%, with a decisive shutout in Game 6. Of note will be the Calgary power play against LA's penalty kill. The Flames were mediocre with the man advantage during the regular season, but scored eight power play goals in the six games against Vancouver, to the tune of 20.5%. Los Angeles, meanwhile, carried over the NHL's best penalty kill and posted a perfect 9/9 in four games against the Avalanche, the only team to register a perfect 100% PK in the first round.
Elsewhere in the playoffs, the other Western Semifinal will feature the St. Louis Blues and the Winnipeg Jets. Both teams won their first round series in a quick five games; the Blues prevailing over Dallas, and the Jets pulling the upset over Central Division champion Nashville. In the East, the story was different, as three of the four quarterfinals went the full seven games: Pittsburgh prevailing over the Rangers, Philadelphia outlasting Columbus, and Florida upsetting Detroit, while the Bruins beat their rivals from Montreal in six. The East semis feature Pittsburgh and Philadelphia once again, and Boston taking on the Panthers.
