Sabres smack the 'cats in 5

Tyler Ennis becomes the first Sabre all season to score a hat trick. He did the feat in Game 5

bthomp05:Incredible work here again. Just love the way you captured League stats.
Good luck in the playoffs - Go Sabres Go.

A Leafs fan cheering for the Sabres? This is crazy.

It shows what happens when you have Microsoft Excel and an hour to waste.

Nice Write-Up

Why thank you

Re: Is he dead, Gorilla? A Buffalo Sabres Season

Host: Curt Menefee
Analysts: Brett Hull, Mike Milbury, Darryl Reaugh

Menefee: Welcome back to the FOX studios, and boy, what a first round in the NHL playoffs it was. So let's look at the second round matchup of the Buffalo Sabres and Philadelphia Flyers. Razor, what do you see in this?

Reaugh: Well, who would have expected to see the Flyers sweep the Rangers? Michael Leighton is in the same form he was last season, when he helped the Flyers to the Stanley Cup Finals, but this series does have some interesting stats. The Sabres scored 28 goals in the five game series against the Florida Panthers, and the top three teams in goals allowed per game ee Philadelphia and Buffalo second and third, respectfully.

Milbury: The Flyers have been through this before, but the Sabres can't risk taking penalties. They are the worst team in Penalty Kill in the playoffs at 50%, and gave the Panthers a chance in games 2 through 4. The Flyers are more explosive than the Panthers, and will take any breaks they can.

Hull: In the season series between these two teams, the series was tied at 2-2. You don't think a guy like Daniel Briere has something to prove against the Sabres? He was insulted with a five-year, $25 million deal after his career 2006-07 season, and he's finally looking like the superstar the Flyers signed. But the Sabres can score, and they blew them out earlier in April 7-0. That Tyler Ennis is a blossoming superstar.

Menefee: So who do we see take the series?

Reaugh: Sabres in 6

Milbury: Sabres in 7

Hull: I'll say Sabres in 5.

Menefee: The Hurricanes and Lightning. Both former Stanley Cup winners, face off in Round 2.

Reaugh: Where did Martin St. Louis go? He was barley noticeable in Round one, and your team leader in points was Mattias Ohlund. However, they still managed to light the lamp with 20 goals in six games, five more than Carolina in the same span.

Milbury: The Hurricanes played rock-solid the first three games, but struggled. They let Boston back into the series and nearly lost Game 6. They are heading into the second round against a Lightning team who saw an offensive explosion under Guy Boucher and were the second best team in the entire league during the regular season.

Hull: You guys hit the nail on the head. The Hurricanes can't continue to play flat like they did in Boston. They still got good performances from Babchuk, Staal, and Jokinen. Goaltending will be the difference. Mike Smith and Cam Ward put up identical stats in the season and have so far in the post-season. I think Tampa Bay has an edge because they have a stronger defense.

Menefee: Predictions?

Reaugh: Tampa Bay in 7

Milbury: Carolina in 7. They'll figure it out.

Hull: Tampa Bay in 4.

Menefee: Let's go to the Campbell Conference, where Phoenix and Chicago will meet up.

Reaugh: This will be a series to watch. The Coyotes did well in the series against Vancouver, and are building off their first playoff victory in a long while. They do need better production from team leader Shane Doan if they want to continue the journey.

Milbury: The Blackhawks are the defending Stanley Cup champs, but I did worry in the Calgary series. The team has found another playoff hero so far in Dave Bolland, and Jiri Tlusty has been solid for them. But guys like Jonathan Toews weren't even noticeable. That's a big concern going against a Phoenix team who is looking to prove themselves.

Hull: The Blackhawks still have the playoff experience. They still have Kane, Seabrook, Keith, Toews, and Patrick Sharp. The Coyotes better be ready. I'm going to say Blackhawks in 6.

Menefee: The rest?

Reaugh: Phoenix in 7.

Milbury; Blackhawks in 6.

Menefee: Now to the Los Angeles Kings and Columbus Blue Jackets.

Reaugh: What the Blue Jackets did was unbelievable. This is a team that many didn't see emerging so quick, but they put a stop to a team that is usually very successful in the playoffs. Steve Mason was brilliant, and if the Kings big weapons struggle again, it could be a problem.

Milbury: Why is everyone still overrating the Red Wings? They were a 7th seed who's leading scorer had 61 points. There getting old, and were beaten by a younger, faster Columbus team. Now they head to face Los Angeles, who still scored 3 goals a game in the fie game series against Anaheim. Guys like Kopitar and Vanek do need to shine, though.

Hull: I still am impressed with Columbus. They've played well all-season under Scott Arneil, and he really helped this talent emerge offensively. Anaheim was also missing Teemu Selanne for the series, which didn't help either against the Kings. I'm saying Blue Jackets in 5.

Milbury: Los Angeles in 7.

Reaugh; Blue Jackets in 6.

You're a Leafs fan. You haven't heard of the playoffs since 2004, so I understand bud.

Well, it turned out to be 4. Those Philly fans were sure mad.

Re: Is he dead, Gorilla? A Buffalo Sabres Season

Analyst: We've elected to unfreeze NHLPA 93 and NHL 94 analyst, Ron Barr, from our studios to give us insight on the Hurricanes-Sabres and Coyotes-Kings. Ron, take it away!

The Buffalo Sabres entered the 2011 NHL playoffs as one of the hottest teams. Their record of 56-20-6 was good for the best record in the league, and the team scored the most goals in the entire league, with the majority of the goals coming in the second half of the season. In the playoffs, Ryan Miller has not needed to be the savior, as the Sabres offense has chipped in an impressive 5.11 goals per game in nine games in the post-season.

Helping out the cause are left wingers Jochen Hecht and Tyler Ennis, whom have six goals and eight assists in nine games in the playoffs. Leading scorer from the regular season Jason Pominville, has thirteen points in the playoffs. The Sabres penalty kill improved in the second round, but rank among the worst among the group of sixteen in the playoffs. The team, though, still has a high goal differential (5.11 to 1.67), and should continue their path to the Stanley Cup.

The Carolina Hurricanes were in a dogfight for the Southeast Division title with the Tampa Bay Lightning before settling for fifth in the conference. After defeating the Boston Bruins in round one, they played the same Lightning who won the first three games in the series, putting the Hurricanes in a do-or-die situation. Led by left winger Jussi Jokinen and center Eric Staal, the Hurricanes came back from 3-0 to win the series. The feat was accomplished by the Philadelphia Flyers last season, who went to the Stanley Cup finals.

The Hurricanes won a Stanley Cup themselves in 2006, with current goaltender Cam Ward receiving the Conn Smythe trophy for his stellar play. Head Coach Paul Maurice led the Hurricanes to a Stanley Cup finals appearance in 2002 behind a strong defensive game. That season, the Hurricanes scored 181 goals for and allowed 181 goals against. In the 2011 playoffs, they've scored 37 goals and allowed 35. They have to neutralize the Sabres offensive if they want to win.

The Phoenix Coyotes built off their successful 2009-10 season by clinching the Pacific Division and earning home ice advantage throughout the Campbell Conference. The Coyotes have one of the best penalty kills in the playoffs, thanks to a solid penalty kill led by Vernon Fiddler and Jay McClement. The team has proven playoff players such as left winger Ray Whitney, defenseman Jay McKee, and goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, who won a cup ring with the Anaheim Ducks in 2007.

With the late-blossoming sniper Lee Stempniak to go along with Shane Doan and Martin Hanzel on the first line, the Coyotes skate one of the fastest and strongest teams in the league, and have faced adversity with the uncertain future the team is going through. A Stanley Cup finals appearance will grow interest from the fans in the team. A Stanley Cup victories could mean many more beautiful years in the city of Glendale.

The Los Angeles Kings hope to head back to the Stanley Cup for the first time since Wayne Gretzky was on the team. The Kings knocked off the surging Columbus Blue Jackets, and they've gained contributions from left winger Thomas Vanek, center Anze Kopitar, and rugged winger Dustin Brown. With an average of 3.33 goals per game, the Kings have the second best offense out of the four teams remaining in the playoffs.

With solid goaltending from Jonathan Quick and an excellent shutdown defense including Norris finalist Drew Doughty, Jack Johnson, and Willie Mitchell, the Kings have the personal to stop the Coyotes. They also have Stanley Cup final experience in center Jarret Stoll, defenseman Rob Scuderi, right winger Justin Williams, defenseman Matt Greene, and left winger Ryan Smyth.
