Pens Ink McLennan; Struggling Conklin Waved

A New Era Has Begun; Lemieux Takes Reigns After Bylsma Firing

There was a day when the Pittsburgh Penguins had the most feared offense in the NHL. Fans would pack buildings in visiting arenas to see the amazing display of talent that the Penguins would tour around the country campaign after campaign. You would have to turn in your NHL fan ID card if you didn't know the captain of that ship was no other than Le Magnifique, Mario Lemieux.

After investing both his life and money into the franchise he carried for years, the Pittsburgh Penguins will now be coached and led by Mario himself as the franchise feels that it has what it takes to make a run at the Stanley Cup, once again becoming a renouned franchise in the world of hockey and professional sports.

"We have a great group of young guys here, and we are looking to improve upon that. I feel I've been around long enough and have easily accomplished enough to garner the respect and attention of these guys", stated Mario in a news conference at Mellon after a 5-0 defeat to the Flyers.

Who could argue that? In 915 games, Super Mario scored 690 goals and added 1033 assists for 1723 points, winning 17 awards and 2 Stanley Cups.

"We are thrilled to have Mario leading us on the ice. It is obviously a great honor to play under arguably the greatest player who ever laced up their skates", remarked Captain Sidney Crosby.

The firing of Dan Bylsma, comes on the heels of a stretch in which the Pens have lost 11 of their last 18 games.

Penguins Add More Grit In Another Trade With San Jose

After struggling to a -13 this season with just 12 assists in 57 games, the Penguins have decided to cut ties with Sergei Gonchar. The Penguins announced a deal had been completed tonight after the Pens 5-3 win against Boston in which Gonchar was -3.

The deal will send Gonchar to San Jose while the Pens will recieve defensmen Kyle McLaren. McLaren is possibly the hardest hitter in the NHL and will add some more grit to a team that recently added Darren McCarty to the mix in effort to harden up a team that had been maligned as soft, casting doubts upon whether or not the Pens could compete in the rough and tough environment that is the NHL playoffs.

The 6-4 McLaren has tallied 5 goals and 13 assists with the last place Sharks this season with a +/- of -6.

This is the second trade between the Sharks and Penguins this season as the two teams exchanged forwards earlier this season when Pittsburgh traded Ruslan Fedetenko and Bill Guerin to the Sharks for Jonathan Cheechoo and Mike Grier.

"We feel this is a really good move for us and are excited to have Kyle in Pittsburgh. He brings an edge that is necessary to be competitive during the playoffs...and that is where our mind is now", stated head coach Mario Lemieux.

Along with the trade, Mario has announced that the lines will be shifting as well in effort to better the Pens attack as a more well-rounded squad.
