Re: Ottawa Senators Dynasty (NHL 09)

Ottawa Keeps On Truckin'

Ilya Kovalchuck is heating up!

Game Summary v. Rangers: We were a little scared of Lundqvist, as we seem to do bad against some goalies. This fear ended up being not realized. They shocked early when Duney scored. A little later in the 1st, Laperriere gets a good rebound and scores on an open net to tie it. That was all we needed; we came back in the 2nd on fire.
Hennessy scored his first goal, then we followed up with two more. In the third period, we began the checking and slowing down game. They got like 1 shot in the third period. We went a bit overboard in the last 5 minutes, which led to a 5 on 3, where they scored, but it didn't matter. Final score: 4-2

Game Summary v. Montreal: These guys may end up being our kryptonite. They forced us into playing their game, which is more controlled. We scored once in each period to give us the lead. It was rather uneventful. Our defense crapped their pants in the third period, as Montreal began to get aggressive. They scored midway through, but we held on until the end. Final score: 2-1.

GM's Thoughts: Overall, these were successful games. It does show that we have a weakness that if our forwards don't get back quick enough, our defense may not be able to handle their attack. Auld is pretty consistant, but sometimes he lets in bad goals. Our penalty kill is usually great, but if they intercept our pass, they'll get a two on one and Auld is not great when the odds are not in his favor. He can stop screened shots and long range stuff all day long, but if they get close, we're in trouble.

Senators Impeach Rangers, Scrape By Against Toronto

Anton Volchenkov is playing solid hockey.

Game Summary v. Rangers: Some goalies can stone us cold, others cannot. Lundqvist is one of those who cannot. Foligno opens up scoring season midway through the first; his first goal in a few games. We scored two more times before some bad defense and being shorthanded allowed the Rangers to make it 3-1. In the third period, the defense made their offensive presence felt, scoring twice. As always, though, in the last five minutes, our opponents score. Final score 5-2.

Game Summary v. Toronto: Everytime the opposing team gets the puck, I am worried because of Auld's lack of consistancy, and because the defense has been meh as of late. Tlusty managed to beat Auld twice, in the first and third period, both on lousey shots Auld should have made. Kovalchuck tied it up in the first with a short handed goal, and Hennessy had an interception and scored on Toskala. Toskala was a friggin' wall this game, stopping all of our beautiful executed one-timers and screened shots. The game goes to overtime, and after Auld's preformance, I was hoping to not have to go to the shootout. Thankfully, Smith had a nice long range slapshot which bounced off the crossbar downwards, which one of their defensemen knocked in on accident. Final score 3-2.

GM's Thoughts: We got lucky versus Toronto, although it would not have mattered if the defense or goalie could play up to snuff without relying on the forwards. Their lack of shooting usually constitues us being in their zone for long periods of time. Westcott was brought as the other top line defender with Volchenkov, but he is really more of an enforcer type, which isn't bad, but it's not ideal. We could also use a dedicated puck moving defenseman to suppliment Meszaros on the second line of defense; its the 2nd and 3rd defense lines which are doing well. Maybe I can get a consistant goalie as well...

Stats
v. Rangers
Shots: 23-17 Ottawa
Hits: 27-13 Ottawa
Goals: Foligno, Setoguchi and Westcott assisting
Spezza, Schubert and Philips assisting
Kovalchuck, Volchenkov and Alfredsson assisting
Shanahan, Mara and Zherdev assisting (PPG)
Smith, Hedjuk assisting
Volchenkov, Spezza assisting
Dubinsky, Gomez and Rozival assisting

v. Toronto
Shots: 48-13 Ottawa
Hits: 22-17 Toronto
Goals: Tlusty, Kubina and White assisting
Kovalchuck, Philips assisting (SHG)
Tlusty, Mayers assisting
Hennessy unassisted
Smith, Vermette assisting (OT)

Stay tuned for Zetterberg return tonight versus the Islanders!

Zetterberg Scores Twice In Return

Back and ready to play!

Game Summery v. Islanders: We just beat them down, no mercy. It didn't start out that way, however. Early in the 1st, Kovalchuck intercepted a pass between two aggressive penalty killers and put one in. Most of the period was uneventful, our defense finally got on track and Auld was playing excellent. Foligno scored to end the period. In the next period, we ventilated DePierto with 4 goals, including one by Zetterberg. He was pulled about 2/3 of the way through the second. Joey McDonald kept us at bay for the rest of the third. The Islanders' new goal was to not get shut out; they scored early in the 3rd. We scored three more times however, and finally a one-timer went into the net. Amazing. Final score 9-1.

GM's Thoughts: I guess Zetterberg inspired us to play better tonght. The defense was there, Auld played great, and all four lines scored at one time or another. We also played the faceoffs better than usual tonight, which was key in staying on the offensive. Schubert did well tonight; he got 3 assists.

Stats
Shots: 43-16 Ottawa
Hits: 23-12 Ottawa
Goals: Kovalchuck unassisted (PPG)
Foligno, Schubert assisting
Spezza, Volchenkov and Auld assisting
Zetterberg, Schubert assisting
Kovalchuck, Alfredsson assisting
Laperriere, Philips and Smith assisting
Rengenheim, Gurein and Mitchell assisting
Zetterberg, Schubert assisting
Setoguchi, Spezza assisting
Kovalchuck, Vermette and Meszaros assisting (Hat trick baby!)

Scare Against Atlanta, 3-0 Against Pens

Laperriere is playing well since the trade.

Game Summary v. Atlanta: Atlanta surprised us during course of the game, and almost beat us. They scored first, and whenever someone else scores early, the game usually becomes difficult. We score twice to take the lead, then Atlanta tied it. Vemette got a nice goal after flattening Hainsley and taking the puck. They took the lead early in the third, but then we scored twice and played good defense to hold out. Two of the goals Elliot let in anybody's grandma could have saved. Conversely, they manage to stop most of our shots. Final score 4-3.

Game Summary v. Pittsburgh: This was one of the most solid games we played. We scored four times in the first period, as the 3rd and 4th lines showed their stuff, especially the nice one-timer by Neil and Laperriere. They decided to attempt a comeback and scored twice in the third period. However, we managed to contain them and play out the clock. We iced the game with an empty netter. Final score 5-2.

GM's Thoughts: The defense was playing excellent, and the offense was doing their job as usual. It has been awhile since the defense has played effectivley in multiple straight games. The goalies continue to be the weak link. Everytime the other team gets the puck, I get a queezy feeling in my gizzard. In the future, there may be some deals made to get some consistant goaltending.

Stats
v. Atlanta
Shots: 10-46 Ottawa
Hits: 29-17 Atlanta
Goals: Perrin, Franzen assisting
Vermette unassisted
Spezza, Hedjuk and Meszaros assisting
Slater, Hainsley assisting
Thorbur, Slater and Hainsley assisting
Vermette, Kovalchuck and Meszaros assisting
Kovalchuck, Alfredsson and Smith assisting

v. Pittsburgh
Shots: 18-30 Ottawa
Hits: 18-21 Ottawa
Goals: Hedjuk, Zetterberg assisting
Neil, Laperriere and Schubert assisting
Vermette, Meszaros assisting
Laperriere, Neil and Smith assisting
Talbut, Beech and Genchan assisting
Dupis and Crosbey assisting
Zetterberg, Auld and Schubert assisting (empty net)
