Super Bowl XXVII Recap

Dallas Cowboys 27 - 17 Buffalo Bills

The Dallas Cowboys find themselves on top of the football world once again. After going 1-15 just a few seasons ago they have knocked off the Buffalo Bills, who were hoping a third time was a charm, to win Super Bowl XXVII. This edition of the Super Bowl got off to a slow start. After the teams traded defensive blows the score stood at 0-0 at the end of the first quarter. The tie came to an end when Cowboys DE Tony Tolbert, who would be the SB MVP with 3.5 sacks, recorded his first sack of the day. The ball squirted loose on the sack which Dallas recovered and converted to a TD with a 4 yard Emmitt Smith run. After the Cowboy defense forced punt after punt, the Bills found themselves down 16-0. The Bills would then mount a drive to end the half. Jim Kelly would find James Lofton on a 21 yard strike in the middle of the field to bring the score to 16-7 to end the half. A slow third quarter was punctuated with the lone score, a Cowboy field goal, to make the score 19-7 Dallas. Jim Kelly would throw a 4th quarter interception that Aikman would turn into another Cowboy TD by throwing a scoring toss to Alvin Harper. After the 2 point try the score stood at 27-7 Dallas. Jim Kelly would throw another TD to James Lofton with 26 seconds remaining in the game to make the score less lopsided. With the Cowboys core being young and just entering their primes, it will be interesting to see how many more of these games they can appear in. As for the Bills, questions about how much longer their window will be open are surely to begin this off-season.

Breaking: Jaguars Hire Tom Coughlin as HC

The Jacksonville Jaguars have hired their 2nd coach in franchise history and in as many seasons. Tom Coughlin comes over from being the head coach at Boston College. Over the last two season Coughlin as compiled a 12-10-1 record. While his overall record is not stellar, the program showed a lot of growth under his watch. After a 4-7 year one, his program went 8-3-1 and finished in the AP top 25. The Jaguars brass found this growth very appealing after not seeing any under Galen Hall last season. Prior to being the HC at Boston College, Coughlin served as the WR coach for Bill Parcells and the Giants from 1988-1990. Prior to his Giants position he served in the same role for the Eagles and Packers in the mid 80s.

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Coughlin said at his press conference. "I have studied the opportunity in great depth and look forward to the challenges of establishing a team from the ground up."

The Jags will look to add talent through the inaugural foray of free agency and their first draft.

Contract terms were not disclosed, although the Boston Globe reported Coughlin will receive $4-million over five years, making him the highest-paid rookie coach in NFL history.

Breaking: Patriots Hire Bill Parcells as HC

Change is coming to the New England Patriots. Starting in 1993 the Patriots will don a new look on the field......they'll also have a new man guiding him. Bill Parcells as agreed to become the next head coach of the Patriots.

"In Bill Parcells we have a man whose track record and commitment to winning are without question," Orthwein said. "This is the beginning of a new and exciting chapter in the history of the New England Patriots."

Parcells initially retired in part to health concerns. He claims that he is healthy and had a strong desire to return to the profession. Parcells had a plenty of suitors. There is word around the league that he interviewed with Redskins, Bears, and Broncos along with the Patriots. The Patriots gave Parcells a deal he couldn't refuse-- he has sweeping powers in all personnel areas, including the draft and the broadening spectrum of the free-agent marketplace -- for a contract, according to a source, worth $1.5 million a season for four years. He made about $1 million his final year with the New York Giants.

Breaking: Broncos Hire Mike Shanahan as HC

Earlier today the Broncos announced the hiring of Mike Shanahan to replace long time coach and former boss Dan Reeves. Shanahan has been the Broncos' first choice this entire process. Bowlen met with Shanahan quickly after the 49ers had lost the NFC title game to Dallas. Negotiations have been touch and go and nearly fell apart on multiple occasions. Team control has been the major sticking point, as Shanahan wants to avoid another situation like he faced with Al Davis. Bowlen reportedly offered him a five-year, $6 million deal, although Bowlen said the package totals seven years.

"This is a long-term commitment on both Mike's part and my part, a seven-year deal," Bowlen said at a news conference. "Mike will have full control of the football operation, which is the way I want it to be."

Shanahan also met with the Giants and Bears during this coaching cycle. He flew back to Denver late yesterday afternoon and met with Bowlen one last time. Shanahan had two stints with the Broncos as an offensive coordinator. 1985-1987 and 1991. Reeves had fired Shanahan after the '91 season, accusing him of conspiring with quarterback John Elway to make changes in game plans. With the move, there is speculation that DC Wade Phillips will look elsewhere for coaching opportunities. It is reported that Phillips would have been the hire if negotiations with Shanahan fell through.

Breaking: Giants Hire Dave Wannstedt as HC From Rival Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys began paying the price for their Super Bowl season yesterday when defensive coordinator Dave Wannstedt was named head coach of the New York Giants. He accepted the job late last night and was formally announced today. The hiring comes after other top candidates Mike Shanahan and Tom Coughlin took jobs elsewhere. There were rumblings of the Giants looking to mend fences with Bill Parcells, but that seemed to just be fan speculation and prayers.

"It's the right opportunity and right time," Wannstedt said. "I'm anxious to get to work. This football program has a great tradition and I'm honored to be a part of it." Wannstedt was the DC for the Cowboys from 1989-1992. The Cowboys went from worst to first after claiming the Lombardi Trophy this season. The Cowboys defense was ranked 5th in total defense, 4th in points allowed, and 3rd in sacks in 1992. He will inherit a roster that will need to transition to fit his scheme as key pieces continue to age or enter free agency. When asked about being able to face his former boss Jimmy Johnson twice a year, Wannstedt replied that he was looking forward to facing the best in the business.

Breaking: Bears Hire Norv Turner as HC as Team Philosophy Shifts

Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Norv Turner agreed to a five-year contract to become the head coach of the Chicago Bears, sources said yesterday.

Turner's hiring is scheduled to be announced by the Bears at a noon news conference today. The Bears have been without a head coach since letting Mike Ditka after refusing to make offensive staff and philosophy changes.

Turner flew to Chicago from Dallas yesterday morning and spent the day in lengthy meetings with team brass to finalize the deal. Throughout the process Turner also interviewed with the Redskins, Broncos, and Giants. The news after rumors of a possible Buddy Ryan reunion with the franchise, but with the team wanting to focus creating a more productive offense nothing materialized.

The Cowboys hired Turner after they finished last in the National Football League in offense in 1990. Since then, the Cowboys have made the playoffs twice, fielded a top 10 offense twice, and won a Super Bowl.

What are the Bears getting in Turner? Cowboys players and associates, to a man, say he should be a terrific head coach. They say he's a hands-on offensive coach who will delegate a large part of the special teams and defensive responsibility to others. They say he's good with people, excellent with details and obsessed with succeeding. He has a quick temper, but diverse personalities from quarterback Troy Aikman to wide receiver Michael Irvin have sung his praises in the days leading up to the Super Bowl.

"He gets the best out of each player," Irvin said. "He lets you know that if you do something well, he'll put you in position to do it during a game."

The Cowboys have now lost their offensive and defensive coordinators from their staff.
