Any way to improve teammate logic on 2 on 1s?

I've noticed that when I am on a 2 on 1, or even a 2 on 0, the CPU teammate coming down the middle only winds up in a proper position around a quarter of the time, generally staying too close to the center of the ice. Are there any approaches for how I can improve this?
