Remember When Sports Games Were Just "Fun"?

Remember when we weren't hyper critical of the graphics in a game? Or the accessories a player's wearing? Or anything, really. We just played games because they were fun. I was playing an updated version of Tecmo Super Bowl on my computer last night for hours. It was an absolute blast. I didn't care that receivers would routinely have nobody near them while they were running 40 yards down field. I didn't care that my QB could throw it 120 yards. I didn't care that if I was in the open field I could swerve up and down and players would follow me instead of playing angles and catching me. All I cared about was that I was having a blast.

What happened? When did we go from willing to accept Tecmo Super Bowl for what it was because, desite all it's flaws it was fun as hell, to slamming games like Madden because the Super Bowl celebration isn't elaborate enough or something miniscule like that?

A lot of it is on the gamer as well. While you can point a big finger on companies that relay on half-finished products that require patches you can also put it on the consumer for simply not being happy. People nowadays whine, complain & are simply unappreciative of things due to the society in which they've grown up in that puts an emphasis on instant gratification without commitment to enjoying.

This is why I rarely visit the Madden forums or forums for games I really enjoy. I've found the more I get involved in a games "community" the more negativity to it I'm explosed to. I just try to enjoy the games for what they are at this point: entertainment. That's what it was for me as a child and so it should be now.

Re: Remember When Sports Games Were Just "Fun"?

One of the EA producers actually made a great point in an interview a couple of years ago. He said the more realistic and realistic-looking the sports games got that the less people thought about having fun and the more they focused obsessively on the realistic nature and how the game compared to the real sport. I think that's true. I also think that's why I can enjoy the games more than younger folks can, because I focus on it as being more of a game whereas a lot of the younger crowd tends to focus on it being more of a reality-simulator.

Don't get me wrong, I want it to be simulation-like and play realistically but at the end of the day if I'm having fun and enjoying myself then that is my main requirement for it being a worthwhile game in my eyes. Although I still reserve the right to complain on the forums LOL..

Re: Remember When Sports Games Were Just "Fun"?

I used to have the most fun playing sports games when I liked winning 100 - 0. Now I just don't have the patience for that lol.

P.S. A LOT of folks on this forum need to learn to balance their gaming experience between fun and reality-simulator IMO. There are too many folks who simply cannot enjoy games anymore because of this.

Seriously, I loved this years Madden but some people have problems with it because of stuff like the Players gloves do not have their number on it

Re: Remember When Sports Games Were Just "Fun"?

for me..sports games are fun. I play games for what they are and don't worry about what they aren't.

Games today are 100x's better than they were years ago, but instead of enjoying the game for the good of it, too many people get caught up in the bad of it.
