2022 NBA Offseason - Free Agency

(Note: For free agency, I take all of the players rated 83-85 and above and put them into a spreadsheet that helps determine where they will sign. You can get a full recap of how the teams are determined is here:https://forums.operationsports.com/f...events-14.html. Essentially it becomes a random team generator based off the parameters I’ve created.)

The 2022 NBA free agent class is very intriguing and has an opportunity to change the landscape of the NBA for the next handful of years.

The biggest name that is expected to garner a lot of attention is Kyrie Irving. The veteran point guard’s three-year contract came to an end, the last year spent without Kevin Durant. Despite playing without Durant, Irving still took the Nets to within two games of a conference championship appearance. But Irving feels as if the Nets roster as constructed doesn’t have the capability to content for a title and has decided to test the market.

While not as big of a name, Jarrett Allen also heads to free agency from Brooklyn. The Nets will need to be smart, as they can try to lock up a pair of pieces that were part of last year’s success, or they can reset their roster and move forward.

Donovan Mitchell is the next biggest name on the market. The young guard heads into the market as an unrestricted free agent and is expected to garner interest from a swath of teams. The Jazz’ recent success, along with the decision to move on from Rudy Gobert, has many believing Mitchell will be quick to return to Utah.

Paul George may perhaps be the biggest name on the market, but all signs indicate he will return to L.A. as Kawhi Leonard has already signed an extension with the Clippers.

Trae Young is the last big name on the market. Young was perturbed when the Hawks decided to trade Capela to Portland, and after winning just nine games has made it clear he doesn’t like the direction the Hawks are headed and intends to sign elsewhere. But being a restricted free agent, that decision may be out of his hands.

Mitchell Robinson, Jusuf Nurkic and Jonas Valanciunas, along with Allen, are a quartet of free agent centers who could look to move. Robinson is eying a departure from the Knicks who haven’t been successful as of late, while Nurkic and Valanciunas are expected to return to their respective teams.

Zach LaVine and Robert Covington are the biggest wings on the market. LaVine has said he does not plan to re-sign with the Bulls, whose young roster has led to disappointing results. Covington, meanwhile, should be one of the most sought after 3-and-D wings on the market.

Let’s get to it.

Irving was quick to the market, taking meetings with the Knicks, Nets and Hawks. The Knicks looked to pitch the hometown kid on a return, with the Nets saying the same. The Hawks, meanwhile, offered Irving a chance to be surrounded by a plethora of young shooters. Having just drafted Julius Walker, the Hawks vision was to have a dominant force on the interior with shooters surrounding him. But the missing piece was a playmaker who could make the rest of the roster better. Irving provided that.

Without much of a second thought, Irving was in. Three-years, $129.51 million and a player option later and Irving was headed to Atlanta.

This meant that the Hawks were letting Young walk, and the vultures started swarming. The Nets quickly got a meeting, looking to replace an offensive-minded point guard with another. The Knicks doing the same, looking to propel themselves into contention. The Heat called briefly, but knowing it would take a sign-and-trade to get him they were soon out.

Just as quick as Irving was into Atlanta from New York, Young was headed the opposite direction. His precise landing spot would be different though, deciding to sign with the Knicks to create a compelling backcourt alongside R.J. Barrett.

While the Irving-Young drama ensued in the East, Donovan Mitchell wasted little time making a decision. To the tune of a $131.56 million deal over four years, and a player option for a fifth, the Jazz had inked their franchise cornerstone into the future. Utah believes they can win now. So does Mitchell.

Paul George had little fanfare himself, signing a four-year extension in L.A. that was worth $238.56 million. The Clippers feel they still have a few title runs in them, with their stars in their early-30s. If they don’t, the Clips will be staring down a hefty salary sheet.

With the big names off the market, the mid-sized fish went to eat.

Jusuf Nurkic told Golden State he was interested in signing, taking a meeting with the two-time defending champions. Of course, in order to get to Golden State, he’d have to facilitate a sign-and-trade to get there. The Warriors knew what that meant, and understood they were just a bargaining chip. Portland paid the big man his money, giving him $138.76 million over four years to remain in the Rose City.

Jonas Valanciunas, like Nurkic, expressed interest in heading to the Bay, as well as a trip to L.A. to join the Clippers. But Memphis held the last meeting, a convinced their veteran big to return on a three-year pact worth $65.56 million.

The third priority big that teams coveted was Mitchell Robinson. The young shot blocker was desperate to get out, but found it difficult to find takers. His camp approached the Warriors about a sign-and-trade involving Andrew Wiggins, but Golden State had little interest. He also had meetings with the Heat and Lakers, but without a clear path to opening salary, talks fizzled. Then came the Spurs.

San Antonio had just drafted the Russian big Sasha Kasparov, but after seeing the success of the two-headed interior attack of the Portland Trail Blazers, were looking to create a formidable interior threat of their own. Sold on the opportunity to be part of a solid organization and potentially dangerous young core, Robinson inked a deal with the Spurs. The deal left just enough room for one more domino.

That domino would not be Jarrett Allen. After losing a young big, the Knicks found themselves in a hole. They had just signed Trae Young, but without Robinson, talent surrounding him ended after Barrett. They went on the offensive, convincing Allen to cross the Brooklyn Bridge and sign in Manhattan. The Knicks are gunning for the playoffs.

Now for the last domino. Pop may be gone, but the Spurs had one last move to make. With enough cap space to sign one last big name, San Antonio reeled in Zach LaVine, giving them a much needed scoring presence. The signing marks the end of an active offseason for the Spurs as they look to return to title contention in a competitive Western Conference.

Covington was the last formidable name on the market, and despite getting attention from a number of suitors, decided to return to Houston as they push to return to the NBA spotlight.

A very exciting free agency! What a decision by the Hawks to trade out Young for Kyrie, though ... not sure how I feel about that. Clearly a divorce was probably best for both sides (based on record alone) but ATL still put a lot of time and effort into young.

Surprised to see how active the Spurs were in the market, unusual for them -- perhaps a new era of San Antonio is upon us.

The lack of veteran leadership among the final five is what tipped the edge for Atlanta. Young had put up big numbers but was looking like a big stats, empty record type of player. With Kyrie they get a player who has the pedigree of a champion and knows what it takes to get there. It'll be interesting to see how the Kyrie meshes with a young roster.

San Antonio really threw their chips into the middle. LaVing indicated that he wanted to go to the Spurs (by way of the generator but still), but Robinson they got when the market for him cooled. All the teams he indicated he'd sign with couldn't bring him in with cap space, so the Spurs went for it. They haven't hit on a ton of drafts, except for Cole Anthony who looks to be promising. But even so, they're deep at the point guard position and don't appear to have a proven scorer, hence the LaVine signing. The Robinson-Kasparov pairing underneath will be worth watching. Will they be in a rotation or do they go for the Trail Blazers approach and put both big men in the starting five?

2022 NBA Offseason - Trade Alert

With free agency ending, there was one other move made in the NBA. The Warriors, looking to improve their depth at the center position and feeling confident in their wing rotation, completed a deal with the Indiana Pacers. Full details below:

Warriors receive: Myles Turner
Pacers receive: Andrew Wiggins, Future Unprotected 1st

With the drafting of Ibraham Mobley, the Warriors now find themselves with a plethora of young, switchable wings. With Anthony Edwards, Jonathan Kuminga, Mobley and Aaron Gordon, Golden State has depth at a position they were once bare at.

The move also gives the Warriors a much-needed defensive presence inside. While Golden State did take home their second-straight title, they barely survived the Clippers with Ivica Zubac and Hassan Whiteside, the Jazz with Rudy Gobert and the Trail Blazers with Jusuf Nurkic and Clint Capela.

Turner will also provide a perimeter threat for the Warriors in their pick-and-pop attack.

Trading away Wiggins, a vital piece to the Warriors’ last two titles, also substantially reduces Golden States salary sheet, and thus luxury tax bill. Turner, entering the final year of his deal, is slotted to make $18 million, half of what Wiggins was due.

The next move for Golden State will be to convince Turner to sign long-term. The young center has been playing third, sometimes fourth fiddle behind Domantas Sabonis, Victor Oladipo and Malcolm Brogdon in Indiana and had been eying the opportunity to blaze his own path in free agency. The Warriors will need to prove to him that his role on the team is valuable, even if he isn’t the leading scorer.

Nice trade! Turner is one of my favorite players to run in 2K, dude is vastly underused by the IRL Pacers IMO. I feel like he could be putting up Chris Bosh Heatle numbers at the very least, he's a great cog to have for a championship contender.

His rebounding is a little below average, but his ability to lock down the paint and also spread the floor are valuable. I like to drive and kick, and with a traditional center inside it clogs the paint. Turner should be able to allow us to have a wide-open lane for Curry and Edwards to attack off the dribble.

2022-23 NBA Season Recap

A year after coming one game short of defeating the Warriors in the conference semis, the Jazz were back with a vengeance. Thanks to Donovan Mitchell, who was named to the All-NBA First Team, the Jazz rolled through the Western Conference, finishing with 60 wins and owning the top spot in the conference.

They wouldn’t, however, own the best record in the NBA. That honor would belong to the Miami Heat. Playing with a vengeance after coming up short in the NBA Finals, the Heat ripped off 65 wins, nine games better than the Celtics in the Eastern Conference.

The Warriors struggled mightly, thanks in large part to a dislocated patella suffered by Stephen Curry. The injury sidelined the reigning MVP for the majority of the season, and Golden State found themselves fighting for a postseason berth.

They did manage to clinch a playoff spot, but needed a win on the season’s final night over Oklahoma City, who finished in ninth and four games out of the playoffs, to move into the six seed and ahead of Portland and Denver.

The West was competitive, however. So competitive that the Warriors, at 45-37, were just one game back of both Dallas and San Antonio, who finished at four and five. The Clippers, with 55 wins, snagged the two seed and the Pelicans had 49 wins and the third seed.

In the East, the Raptors (53-29) and the Bucks (49-33) rounded out the top four. The Bucks are still under pressure to make the most of Giannis’ prime and draw the 76ers in the first round of a playoffs that may matter more than ever.

On the back of Kyrie Irving and Rookie of the Year winner Julius Walker, the Hawks won 45 games and finished in sixth. Charlotte and Orlando rounded out the top eight, with the Magic owning the tie-breaker over the Pistons to get the last playoff spot.

Anthony Edwards and Cole Anthony, two of the top picks from the 2020 NBA Draft Class, made their first marks on the NBA. Edwards garnered most improved honors after stepping into the Warriors’ starting five and setting career-highs in points, rebounds and assists, with 19.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists while shooting close to 40% from deep.

Cole Anthony, meanwhile, was a sparkplug for the Spurs off the bench. Anthony averaged 17.7 points and 4.0 assists for the Spurs as San Antonio made their return to the NBA playoffs.

Without Curry, the Warriors turned to Edwards and Klay Thompson, the latter of whom was named to the All-NBA Second Team as he took on a lions share of the Warriors’ offense load.

Trae Young enjoyed a successful personal season in New York, but the team success again didn’t follow. The Knicks managed just 35 wins and finished three games out of the playoff race.

Re: The Golden Era | A Golden State Warriors Dynasty (NBA 2K20)

2023 NBA Playoffs

Golden State enters the 2023 playoffs with a chance to do what only three franchises before them have managed to accomplish: win three-straight NBA titles. This road would, without a doubt, be the most arduous. As a six seed, they wouldn’t have home court advantage. Next, they’ll have to go through a young and determined New Orleans squad looking to make a name for themselves in the first round. And if they did manage to win, a date with either the Clippers or Trail Blazers would await them in the second round.

Not only is the road more difficult, but the aging core is one year older. Curry missed a substantial part of the season thanks to a dislocated knee cap and sprained knee, raising concerns about his ability to stay healthy when they would need him most.

But that wasn’t the only storyline entering the playoffs. Let’s start in the East.

Miami is coming off a disappointing five-game NBA Finals a year ago and is looking to get back there with their big three. Time is not on the Heat’s side, as Jimmy Butler and Kevin Durant appear to be entering the final years of their prime, or have already passed them. This may be the last year they have an opportunity to.

Although Boston isn’t facing the same time crunch as the Heat, the Celtics are facing a crunch nonetheless. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown have been great, but the organization knows they can’t keep banking on their young duo to eventually break through. Eventually they need to do it.

The Raptors have stayed among the game’s best despite losing Kawhi Leonard, including having made the 2020 NBA Finals. But that championship window could still be in question as they have failed to return to the Conference Finals since then.

Philadelphia is in dangerous territory. While they continue to make the playoffs, they have been mute every time they’ve arrived. If they fail to advance against the Bucks, changes could be the horizon.

In the East, the Jazz own the top spot but have plenty of pressure to make it matter. Donovan Mitchell is locked up long-term but they need more than just Conference Finals appearances to show for it.

The Clippers, like the Warriors, may be on their last legs. Kawhi and PG are both nearing the ends of their primes and are looking to add a second ring to the L.A. case.

New Orleans and Dallas are in very similar spots. Each has a young, generational talent, but neither has made a serious run at a title. If they come and go in the playoffs without so much as a splash, could their young stars get restless?
Let’s get to it.

First Round

Western Conference
Utah 3, Denver 1
The Jazz make quick work of the Nuggets, sending Nikola Jokic and Denver home in the first round for the third time in the last four years.

(7) Portland 3, (2) Los Angeles Clippers 2
The Trail Blazers notch the biggest upset of the five-game first round era. Thanks to their mammoths underneath, the Trail Blazers advance yet again as they try to crown Lillard.

(6) Golden State 3, (3) New Orleans 2
Golden State was not about to let their bid for a three-peat end in the first round. The Warriors advance, and the frustrations in New Orleans continue.

(5) San Antonio 3, (4) Dallas 2
Like the Pelicans, the Mavs are headed for another disappointing first round exit. How much longer will Luka tolerate the lack of success?

Eastern Conference
Miami 3, Orlando 1
Facing their in-state rival, the Heat make quick work of the Magic in their pursuit of a second straight Finals trip.

Boston 3, Charlotte 0
Charlotte never stood much of a chance against Boston and the Celtics sweep their way into the Conference Semifinals.

(6) Atlanta 3, (3) Toronto 0
The Raptors are yet again swept out of the first round of the playoffs. The Hawks, meanwhile, are riding Kyrie on the sequel revenge tour. The Raptors were without Rudy Gobert due to a knee injury.

(5) Philadelphia 3, (4) Milwaukee 1
The series win may have kept the 76ers roster alive for at least one more season, but the loss may send the Bucks into a make or break year. Milwaukee was missing Khris Middleton due to a dislocated patella.

Conference Semifinals

Western Conference
Utah 4, San Antonio 3
For the second time in the last three years, the Jazz are headed to the Conference Finals. It wasn’t without some stress, however, as the Jazz had to rally from a 3-1 deficit to make the Conference Finals.

(6) Golden State 4, (7) Portland 1
In a rematch of the 2022 Western Conference Finals, the Warriors keep their train rolling with relative ease. The addition of Myles Turner proves valuable, as the young big man was able to keep the Warriors competitive on the interior.

Eastern Conference
Miami 4, Philadelphia 3
Miami advances, but had to rally from a 3-1 hole of their own. Philly was riding a confident wave, but the Miami Big Three was too much and would not be held out.

(6) Atlanta 4, (2) Boston 2
Kyrie Irving refuses to back down. The veteran point guard propels the Hawks onto the Conference Finals for the first time since 2015 and just the second time in franchise history.

Conference Finals

Golden State 4, Utah 0
The Jazz can beat everyone; except the Warriors. Golden State’s pursuit of a three-peat rolls on as they advance to their eighth final in the last nine years. If they plan on winning the title, they’ll likely have to do it without Draymond Green, who broke his hand in Game 3.

Miami 4, Atlanta 2
Kyrie Irving’s revenge tour ends at the hands of the same team as a year ago. The Heat’s revenge tour continues. Miami books a date with the Warriors, the team they have been eying all season long.
