No. 2 West Virginia defeated the Kentucky Wildcats 81-69 tonight, improving their record to 8-0 while Kentucky fell to 3-4.
Stefon Hull led the Mountaineers with 18 points on 7-16 shooting, including 3-6 from beyond the arc. He also grabbed six rebounds. Joshua Wilkerson added 13 points, while Oscar Carroto contributed 12 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals. Off the bench, Brandin Plummer put up 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, providing a much-needed spark for the Mountaineers.
Kentucky's Jeremee Morris was the top scorer for the Wildcats with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Jimmy Bird added 13 points, while Ije Stevenson chipped in 10 points. Corry Rudakas dished out 7 assists in the loss.
West Virginia shot 30-70 (43%) from the field, 10-28 (36%) from three-point range, and a disappointing 11-22 (50%) from the free-throw line. Kentucky shot 28-61 (46%) from the field, but just 3-17 (18%) from beyond the arc. They did shoot a more respectable 10-13 (77%) from the charity stripe, however.
"We've got to do better at the free throw line," remarked West Virginia head coach James Frizzell after his team's win. "50% from the line just isn't going to do it, especially in bigger games."
West Virginia returns to Morgantown for their next game on Sunday against Gardner-Webb.

The second-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers cruised to a commanding 95-60 victory over the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs tonight in Morgantown, WV.
Stefon Hull led West Virginia with an impressive 24 points, shooting 9-16 from the field and 6-10 from beyond the arc. Oscar Carroto contributed 13 points, five rebounds, and five assists, while Tremmell Amerson added six points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Gardner-Webb's Linas Osborn was the standout player for the Runnin' Bulldogs, scoring 23 points on an inefficient 9-25 shooting and adding three rebounds. Gregory Bigelow contributed 15 points, while Sherman Dickey chipped in 12 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. L.F. Fall also proved valuable, dishing out a game-high 11 assists for the Bulldogs.
The Mountaineers' bench also played a significant role, with redshirt senior center Brandin Plummer leading the way with 16 points, 14 rebounds, and two blocks in 21 minutes of action.
West Virginia has five days off before they travel to Raleigh, NC to take on No. 21 NC State for their biggest test yet this season.

The No. 2-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (10-0) continued their winning streak to start the season with a 77-63 victory over the No. 19-ranked North Carolina State Wolfpack (6-3) on December 11, 2038. Brandin Plummer, who was elevated to a starter for this game, replacing Tasmir Nelson, had an impressive performance, scoring 18 points and grabbing 13 rebounds, and leading the Mountaineers in both categories.
West Virginia led 38-30 at halftime and maintained their lead in the second half, outscoring the Wolfpack 39-33. The Mountaineers shota respectable 44% (31-71) from the field and 37% (11-30) from the three-point line. They also outrebounded the Wolfpack 41-30 and had a total of 13 assists, 6 steals, and 5 blocks.
In addition to Plummer's strong performance, Stefon Hull contributed 15 points and 4 rebounds, hitting five three-point baskets, while Joshua Wilkerson added 11 points and 2 assists. Tremmell Amerson scored 8 points and pulled down 9 rebounds. Off the bench, Tasmir Nelson had 7 points and 10 rebounds in 21 minutes.
NC State shot only 35% (21-60) from the field tonight. Ilian Valdez and Ronny Anagonye led the Wolfpack in scoring with 14 points each. Bruce Todd also scored 13 points, and Tremmell St. Fort totaled an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double from off the bench.
Next, West Virginia will travel to Huntington, WV to take on the Marshall Thundering Herd, who are off to a hot 4-0 start and will be itching to beat their in-state rivals.

The No. 2-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers narrowly escaped an upset by the Marshall Thundering Herd tonight in Huntington, winning 73-70 to keep their undefeated season intact.
The game was neck and neck throughout, with Marshall (5-1) holding a slim 32-31 lead at halftime. West Virginia (11-0) managed to outscore the Thundering Herd 42-38 in the second half, thanks to a balanced scoring attack led by Oscar Carroto with 18 points, Stefon Hull adding 16 points, and Brandin Plummer contributing 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Marshall's Rich Cleaves had a chance to put his team ahead in the final seconds of the game, but his go-ahead three-pointer missed its mark. Cleaves finished the game with 15 points, while Chuck Bullock led the Thundering Herd with 20 points.
Jonathan George, Marshall's point guard, recorded 9 assists and 4 points, while Lonnie Ortiz tallied 8 points and 11 rebounds. On the bench, Donny Blevins added 6 points for the Thundering Herd.
