Southern Conference Tournament Quarterfinals

The third time wasn't a charm for UNC Greensboro as the Elon Phoenix easily blew out the Spartans 78-48 tonight in the Southern Conference Quarterfinals, beating UNCG for the third time this season.

The Phoenix (14-13) opened the game on a 12-0 run and UNC Greensboro (16-13) would never get closer than 10 points from there. Elon led by 22 points at halftime and cruised in the second half.

Willie Jefferies scored 12 points for Elon. while Gary Quick scored 16 points. Landon Devonish also scored 12 points and hauled down 4 rebounds while Tommie Fontenot added 10 points and 4 rebounds. Dumar Lufkin also tallied 10 points, 6 rebounds, and a pair of blocks.

UNC Greensboro shot a miserable 29 percent from the field and just 2-for-15 from three-point range. Morris McCrommon and Dez Carter were the only Spartans to score in double-figures. McCrommon scored 10 points and grabbed 6 rebounds while Carter tallied 10 points and 5 boards.

"Tonight was pathetic," bemoaned UNC Greensboro head coach Lee Williamson. "We lost our first two games against [Elon], but they were still fairly competitive. Tonight, after we went down early we just gave up and rolled over. What a sad way to end what was a fairly successful season."

The Spartans' season is likely over while Elon will advance to the Southern Conference Tournament Semifinals tomorrow night.
