It's been a long time coming, but it seems like we might finally get a Top Spin successor on current-gen consoles. Tennis World Tour is set to be formally introduced at Gamescom 2017 in August, and I'm very excited about it.

I have owned every Top Spin that ever existed, as well as a temporary venture into Virtua Tennis 4, which had better graphics but was nearly unplayable by comparison. With that being said, I feel like Top Spin set the standard in being able to translate tennis to video games. I kid you not, my youth tennis coach noted that my decision making started to improve on the court as I played the game more.

Gentlemen, start your E-engines? All the questions and banter about who has got the better stick skills? Who runs what position better? Well, now it’s time to put your time, effort and job title where your mouth is. NBA 2K has taken another step towards the forefront of sports gaming with the release of its eSports model.

Set to debut in 2018, each NBA franchise will have the opportunity to draft individual gamers based on skill and ability, forming five-man teams to compete in an NBA/NBA 2K union that could change the way we play forever. Some think that 2K hasn't lived up to the hype the last few years in terms of supporting its eSport, and working on this new partnership behind the scenes could be a reason why. Based on things I've read, the Bucks, Grizzlies and Warriors have all made significant investments and are likely to lead the pack in this new league.

From the conversations had, it sounds like season one will last about five months. The goal seems to be to expand and create real life work opportunities, which is encouraging for someone who may be straddling the fence about whether the opportunity is legit. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver spoke about the potential for the pilot: “The popularity of NBA 2K with the young and growing eSports community provides a unique opportunity to develop something truly special for our fans and the gaming community. We look forward to combining our best-in- class NBA team operators with Take-Two’s competitive gaming expertise to create a brand new league experience.”

When challenged with an NBA 2K “free choice” opportunity, I immediately decided to make it personal. Writing about things I’m passionate about is the whole reason I’m in this spot, so why not take over for Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchak?

But first, here’s a little background. Kobe Bean Bryant retired following the 2015-16 season, and to that point I’d spent 80 percent of my life rooting for the purple and gold with no remorse. It was a beautiful marriage for a long time. A basketball junkie rooting for the most-hated franchise in the world with an owner who had an open checkbook and the goal of winning at all costs? Check and mate. I have to admit, Dr. Jerry Buss spoiled me. I’m used to moves that make sense being made.

In addition, I also have ties to Jahlil Okafor and still believe the basketball world will be his once he's in a better situation. I still wake up at night seething about the moment the Lakers passed on a solid young big man to draft a player that played the exact same position of their all-rookie first-team player the year before.

To this day, I still believe the Lakers franchise would benefit from swapping Russell for Okafor. I even recorded a video at work the day of the draft warning I’d be shifting my loyalties to the Warriors if the Lakers took anyone other than Okafor. For so long, I didn’t even think they’d have a shot at Okafor, much less have him in their hands and pass.

Needless to say, I’m convinced I could do a better job than the current Lakers regime because, well, video game GMs just aren't that smart.

Years of griping about basketball have finally worked to my advantage and we've got one of the best versions of NBA 2K ever this season. But the key to being the best and sustaining is knowing that the journey is about constant growth. If you're not getting better, then you're just wasting away. Standing as the sole competitor in this corner of gaming, it would be easy for 2K to remain stagnant. Here's my take on how to prevent such stagnation.

Ready for round two?

Let's get it.

This side of the floor seems to really give folks trouble. Part of that is because the offense in this year's game is overpowering, but the other portion consists of a factor you've probably seen me mention already: player ability. More than ever before, you really have to be in-tune with your MyPlayer and his capabilities. For instance, I play with a 6-foot-7 point guard, which allows me the ability to help and scramble defensively without completely deserting my man for a wide open look. Staying within the realm of of your player's strengths is going to be key in deciding whether you get the stop or you don't. Improving your "stick skills" is pretty obvious, but three key factors could help take your Pro-Am squad from average to elite: communication, synchronicity and IQ.

What's good folks?

Now, I'm not going to beat around the bush with you guys. Going back to last year, I think NBA 2K's Pro-Am separates the men from the boys. In order to be successful, one has to at least have an elementary grasp of the concept of basketball. Add in the quick thinking already required to man the sticks on any game, and you really have an opportunity to make your homies put their proverbial money where their mouth is.

I figured I'd start this three-part series with everyone's favorite side of the floor: offense.

You really have to take pride in your offense in this edition of the NBA 2K series or you will be embarrassed. From catching nothing but air on an open three to finding no rim on a layup attempt, I'm pretty sure I've just about seen it all.
