EA is running a vote to decide which fighter will adorn the cover of the upcoming EA UFC alongside light-heavyweight champ Jon "Bones" Jones. It's not entirely surprising to see Jones on the cover, as the guy is (effectively) undefeated and has a veritable trophy case of high-level victims on his resume. It is a bit surprising to see a second athlete on the cover, though. I've speculated on the reasoning for cover votes ... Read More

All things considered, I thought THQ did a decent job stewarding the UFC brand for all of the years it held the license. The improvement in the franchise was notable with each iteration, even though the sales were on a slight decline at the same time. I remember hearing Dana White say how he wanted to keep supporting THQ because both them and the UFC had struck a deal when both companies were much younger, ... Read More

There's been a lot of news from the world of fighting games, especially since WWE 2K14 is approaching release and EA UFC is allowed to pull back the curtain a bit more.

Let's get to it...

EA UFC Adds Women's Division

One of the recent developments for EA UFC is that it will feature a playable roster of women for the first time ever in a UFC game. The company only confirmed that champion ... Read More

One of the more impressive things coming out of Gamescom 2013 is the pre-alpha gameplay trailer for EA Sports UFC. The trailer ended up being an expanded version of some of the elements that we saw at E3 2013, but it looks even more encouraging than what we were shown a couple of months back.

The first thing to keep in mind is that the gameplay being shown is pre-alpha, as the title ... Read More

After watching the surprise knockout of Anderson Silva a few weeks back, I wondered about the viability of showboating and "faking the funk" in combat sports, but also in the context of fighting games in general. There were definitely some pundits and fighters who were backing Weidman in the fight, but I think the conventional wisdom was that it was going to be a grind-it-out type of fight for Weidman or a dominant ... I've been to E3 three times now, and it's always such a zany place to go. To be sure, it's a treat to be able to go into what is essentially a giant video arcade and play around, but getting from place to place can always be a bit crazy with the sheer amount of people there. Either way, the industry needs the E3 spectacle in order to gain public mind share and to keep itself on its toes, so it's hard ... Read More

With EA showing yet another trailer for EA UFC today, we were able to glean a few more details about what this next-gen MMA product will be about. Disappointingly, they didn't show any true gameplay in that trailer, but there seemed to be a possibility of the game being playable on the show floor, so we'll certainly try and get our hands on it.

The new "MMAI" was setup as a game-changer for fighter intelligence, with ... Read More

With EA having completed its tease on twitter of "eight features in eight days" for EA UFC, we now have a better sense of what some of the innovations might be for this next-gen MMA product (scheduled to come out in the spring/summer of 2014). We'll know more at E3 next week, where some more gameplay pics -- and potentially hands-on time -- will be likely, but from what they're teasing, it looks they're focusing on core gameplay ... With E3 just around the corner, the big three fighting games are all in different places on the spectrum. Amusingly, we haven't really actually seen anything from the upcoming games, even though we're hearing a lot about them.

The Fate of Fight Night

In a recent statement, EA has directed some cynicism towards its generally well-liked Fight Night brand, and the company seems to have shifted its focus ... Read More

With Microsoft officially unveiling its new Xbox One console today, we can finally start gearing up for both of the new systems. Even the industry at large seemed ready, as developers have already started letting the press releases fly now that they are free to talk about the existence of both the PS4 and Xbox One. Surprisingly, EA Sports, and sports content in general, played a big part in the reveal of the new system. ... Read More

In the deluge of financial information that EA revealed this week, it was noted that there won't be a UFC product until after March of 2014. I'd say this is a bit of surprise, as EA's fighting products have been lurking in the shadows for a while now. This means that the earliest we're likely to see a UFC product from EA is the summer of 2014, but it is conceivable that it could be pushed to the fall. Still, the spring/summer seems ... Read More

Since the UFC seems to be experimenting with their "Ultimate Fighter" television show with each new iteration, I wonder if it might be worth experimenting with it in the gaming world. The career modes in most of the recent UFC games from THQ have been pretty stale, with the same basic calendar and training management that doesn't really factor in a lot of the emotion of working your way into and through the UFC.

With 2K announcing that The Rock will be on the cover of WWE 14, it got me thinking about the role of covers in the sports game business. Obviously, there is some fan interaction and input by having cover votes and the like, but in this day and age of sports, can one person really embody all that is good and desirable about the sport?

With the WWE choosing The Rock as their cover athlete, it sends a ... Read More

After reading about Ring Kings, a project boxing management sim that is looking for funding on Kickstarter (interview with devs forthcoming), it got me thinking about indie games and how the fighting game space can leverage crowd-sourcing to fill the gaps left by the current crop of AAA products.

Ring Kings looks to fill the gap left by the Fight Night series by providing a deep simulation management ... Read More

Much like WWE '13, the UFC series can be filled with all sort of amazing action and awesome moments. Then again, since both games are made by THQ, the chances of seeing crazy glitches and wacky stuff is also increased. Here are some videos that show some amazing knockouts and also some crazy, unexpected moments.
