NHL 2024 Offseason

Welcome losers to the 2024 offseason.

First one in Utah Ice/Yeti/Hockey Club/Whatever they name it history.

That's my big bet for the offseason is that team just going crazy with moves. 50m in cap space while you have 11/20 guys signed to deals already. They could easily add 2 or 3 top line guys to this team.

Potential UFAs like Reinhart, Stamkos, Guentzel. Not the biggest FA class this year as next year could be the big one depending on who re-signs. Names like Crosby, Tavares, Marner and more are UFAs in 2025.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and predict that Sidney Crosby will never see the open market as a UFA.

Re: NHL 2024 Offseason

Leafs end of season pressers were interesting.

Some guys give the generic "we gave it our all and we were close to winning the series" lines, others you could tell were bothered by it.

People speculating based on reactions that Keefe possibly has told guys he's not coming back (or maybe Shanahan or Treliving told guys). Keefe didn't hold an end of season meeting with the players.

And adding on to this, Treliving and possibly Shanahans end of season stuff won't happen until Thursday. Given what happened last year where we didn't hear from Shanahan until after the Dubas stuff, I could see Keefe being gone by tomorrow.

Edit- To make things more interesting, the management date has been changed to Friday. Something has to be up.

People online seem to want Berube as coach if Keefe is gone. I know Gallant was a name people wanted last season, so we'll see which candidates emerge if Keefe is gone.

Re: NHL 2024 Offseason

Rick Bowness retires as a coach.

How long had he been in the league? He's the last active coach from the 80s.

He played against, coached, and coached against Randy Carlyle!

Re: NHL 2024 Offseason

Sheldon Keefe has been fired!

3 years too late but still about time!

Somehow he was one of the longest tenured coaches in the league. Only 4 coaches are left in the league who were hired BEFORE the 20/21 season!

Re: NHL 2024 Offseason

Shanahan basically said everything except explicitly stating they were going to explore options re: the core four this summer.

If we assume Matthews is untouchable and Tavares is untouchable (for very different reasons), the obvious choice would be to trade Marner over Nylander, right?

Even then, if you get Marner to waive his NTC, and you find a trade partner he will agree to sign an extension with (an obvious prerequisite for any trade, no team will give up anything unless the deal includes an extension)...what sort of return would make Toronto fans happy?

Getting rid of his salary would be a win.

But in general, I'd say a top line dman or #1 goalie, and they need prospect depth too.

That's the issue: Marner has to waive his no trade clause. Only way he does that is if the team acquiring him signs him to a huge deal. And then the Leafs have to find a trade partner that is willing to deal away a top offensive defenseman (not draft picks) to get him. That's going to be very challenging. It's not out of the realm of possibilities that they trade away Marner for less than fair value and miss the playoffs without his regular season production. You can't expect Matthews to get them in the playoffs by scoring 60+ goals every season.
