NHL 24 Franchise Mode Career

<p style="line-height:1.7">And We’re Back! Unlike the Minnesota Franchise I had, this one is a lot more rule heavy and I’ve got multiple different spreadsheets keeping track of a million different things. Hopefully it keeps this franchise mode more interesting.

Here’s a layout of the general rules to start:

Player Morale
If a Player’s Morale lowers his overall, he must be traded immediately. If he has a NTC, treat it like it is the last year of his contract

Signing Free Agents
  • Can only change contract length by +1 or -1
  • If length is changed, you must offer the asking price or lower
  • One “Major” (aka 77+ OVR) signing allowed for each position (F,D,G). One Free slot allowed per year. Free Slot is not transferable to following year if not used

Scouting Staff
3 Amateur Scouts allowed (1 CHL, 1 USA, 1 Europe)
Allowed 1 Amateur Scout signing every offseason
Can hire more scouts if drafting goals are met:

(Apply only to picks outside the 1st round)
Select Med Top 6 F / Med Top 4 D - 1 Scout for League player played in
Select Med Elite Goalie - Hire Scout with best goalie attributes
Select Low Elite - Hire Scout with the highest “Prospect Discovery” Rating
Select Anything Better - 1 Scout for League player played in + 1 Free Scout Hiring

Can also lose Scouts for Poor Drafting:
(Apply to ALL picks)
No Players above Med Top 6 F / Med Top 4 D - Fire 1 Scout
Poor 1st Round Selection (Player within 5 picks after clearly better) - Fire Best Scout
No Players above 65 OVR - Fire 1 Scout
Poor Selection (Player within 5 picks after clearly better) - Fire 1 Scout

Trading
  • Trade has to make sense for the AI, can't abuse broken values. Basically, if I wouldn't take that trade as the other GM, I can't do it.
  • Can only trade away picks from next three years
  • Cannot trade Free Agent Signings until last two years of contract
  • Can only acquire one AI draft pick per trade, unless the AI offers the trade. (Exception for Superstar Trades)
  • You are allowed THREE chances on trades. The first initial offer to see how interested they are, and then the second and third / final offer to get the deal done. If final offer is turned down, you can not try again with those players until next year

Drafting
  • Can only trade up once, can only trade down once
  • Must pick one of each forward position, two defenseman and a goalie
  • When trading down in the draft, you can only use Trade Finder to accept offers. You cannot make a manual trade. (This simulates reality better since not every team will actually want to trade up into your spot)

Contract Negotiations
UFA’S
WANTS Extension
Can be signed during Re-Sign Phase.
Can only Modify contract length by +1 or -1

DOESN’T WANT Extension
Must let player go to Free Agency.
Can still be signed during Free Agency

RFA’S
WANTS Extension
Can be signed during Re-Sign Phase.
Can only Modify contract length by +2 or -2

DOESN’T WANT Extension
Can only sign for a 1 year Contract OR Qualifying Offer

GM Goals
Owner Mode will be kept on for this franchise. The sole purpose of this is to have the ability to use different teams throughout the Franchise. To give myself a challenge and have a chance of not being allowed to come back, I’ve given myself goals for every season. There will be On Ice Goals, Roster Goals, Salary Goals and Owner Goals. These goals can be adjusted as the years go by. I will need to achieve at least 10 points to have the opportunity to come back, should I so choose. Here is how the layout would look like:

ON ICE GOALS
Year 1
Win 35 Games (+2 Points)
Bonus - Make the Playoffs (+1 Point)

Year 2
Make the Playoffs (+2 Points)
Bonus - Advance to 2nd Round (+1 Point)

Year 3
Make the ECF (+2 Points)
Bonus - Make the Stanley Cup Finals (+1 Point)

Roster Goals
Year 1 - Trade one of the middle tier salaries by the end of the draft (+1 Point)
Year 2 - Acquire a 1st Round Pick in the upcoming Draft (+1 Point)
Year 3 - TBD (+1 Point)

Salary Goals
Can’t be within $5.000M of Cap Limit until you make it past Round 2 - (+1 Point)

Owner Goals
Main Owner Goal (+1 Point)

<p style="line-height:1.7">
Player NTC’s and NMC’s:
A spreadsheet from reddit is used to give players NMC’s and NTC’s throughout the franchise. Adds some realism and makes it harder to trade players. Search up NHL Contract Mini game on Reddit and you should be able to find it. (Shoutout to the creator of the sheet btw!)

Team Status:
Before the start of every season I will need to choose a “Team Status” based off what I’m expecting from the team that season. Each one of the status options (Champion, Contender, Hopeful and Rebuilder) will have different rules and expectations for that particular status. Failing to achieve an expectation or breaking a Status rule will result in another event added, which we’ll get into later.

Superstar Trade Requests
A different spreadsheet I borrowed and made adjustments too was from the Basketball Dynasty section of OS. I’d highly recommend everyone to check out Marshdaddy’s “The Golden Era” Dynasty over there as it has some of the best work on this site. What this sheet does is determine if a player rated 90 Overall or better either wants to or is willing to leave his team. Similar to how the free agent sheet works, it will take multiple factors into consideration to determine a player's decision. This will be used every offseason (Starting in Year 3) for our teams Superstars or/and whenever I try and trade for a Superstar player

Free Agency Interest Mini Game:
I’ve created a spreadsheet where it takes into account a team's success over the past three seasons as well as teammate ability, team location and teammate nationality to determine a player's interest in a contract offer. There is also a possibility a player has a request for the contract, such as wanting to join a team that is a Contender. Being able to reward these requests will make the player more interested in wanting to sign. However, if you tell a player you will accept their request but don’t follow through, there will be an event added to the event wheel spin. Let’s get into that event system now…

Event System:
A list of over 180 different events/scenarios will be randomized every year and at least three will take place every season. More events can be added due to multiple different things such as Failing a GM Goal, Failing or Breaking a Team Status Rule or ,as you read earlier, not keeping a free agent request. These events can be bad or good (majority are bad). The Event wheel will be spun at the beginning of the regular season and will be woven into the story aspect of this series.

After all that I think we can begin to get into this franchise. We’ll see how it goes to start and potentially make tweaks along the way if needed. I’ve already started this so expect a rapid fire of posts up until the end of year one. I hope you guys enjoy!

To start this series we'll be running with the....

Re: NHL 24 Franchise Mode Career

2023-24 Season Review
By Russell Dawson / Vancouver Canucks
April 20, 2024
<p style="line-height:1.7">
The Vancouver Canucks finished the 2023-24 season with a 48-24-10 record, finishing as the 3rd best team in the NHL. Here were some of the biggest storylines along the way

Thatcher Demko's Struggles, DeSmith's Success
While they were winning a good chunk of games, Thatcher Demko wasn’t the prime reason for it. With a subpar save percentage the Canucks looked instead to Casey DeSmith to try his luck in net. And he did not disappoint. DeSmith took over the starting role and ran with it as he finished with 43 games (Demko played 41) and had a 22-12-6 record with a .917 SV% and a 2.65 GAA. Compare that to Demko, 23-11-4 with a .895 SV% and a 3.27 GAA, and you see why DeSmith will be the starter for Game 1 come playoff time.

Arshdeep Bains Hot Start to NHL Career
Arshdeep Bains has bursted into the NHL like a bull in a China shop. At first being an injury replacement for Pius Suter, Bains was expected to play just a few games before returning to Abbotsford. But when he got a look on the top line alongside Petey and Boeser, the Vancouver native made the absolute most of it. He's held that 1st line LW spot since being called up and has made Pius Suter no longer a constant in the VAN lineup. Will he be able to rise to the occasion and continue his play with playoffs just around the corner?

Best 4th Line in the NHL
Together as a line since day one of the season, Di Giuseppe, Lafferty and Joshua have been the best 4th line in the entire league. All are above a +11 and all have 25 or more points. They've been killing it all season and will be huge for the team come playoffs. Something to be concerned about however is Lafferty and Joshua on expiring deals. With such big seasons, will Vancouver have the cap space to bring these guys back?

Boone Jenner and Chris Tanev heading to Vancouver
The Canucks make two big moves to solidify their lineup in a year where for the first time in what feels like forever, Vancouver has a chance to do something special. Chris Tanev returns after leaving as a free agent in 2020. Blue Jackets Captain Boone Jenner will leave the only NHL team he's ever known and be a trustworthy 3rd line center on faceoffs.

Here were some of the biggest player movements around the league during the trade deadline:
Jeremy Swayman (BOS) -> BUF
Adam Larsson (SEA) -> TOR
Vladimir Tarasenko (OTT) -> CAR

2024 1st Round Playoff Preview and Predictions: Ranked by Least to Most Exciting Matchups

By Vincent Barlow 1h Ago
__________________________________________________
<p style="line-height:1.7">What could have been in this series between these two teams. Jeremy Swayman must be dying to see his Buffalo Sabres face the team that traded him back at the Trade Deadline. But instead of being out on the ice he'll be watching from the press box. In just his 6th game in a Sabres uniform the American netminder was hit while trying to make a desperation save. The collision would result in a bad MCL Sprain for the 25 year old and one that will keep him from competing in this year's Stanley Cup Playoffs. Victor Olofsson meanwhile is looking to exact some payback against his own former squad. He's been on absolute fire since joining the B's, scoring 15 points in 17 games and finishing with 66 on the year, a career high. Will he be able to continue that in this series? Rasmus Dahlin could also miss possibly the first two games in Boston as he's still recovering from a pulled groin.

Prediction - Boston in 5 Games

<p style="line-height:1.7">This series and the Boston-Buffalo on are the two matchups where it's very, very hard to see one team not winning. The Colorado Avalanche possess a dominant trio of players in MacKinnon, Makar and Rantanen and have Cup winning pedigree spread throughout the lineup.

Anaheim meanwhile is a young team who has up and coming stars that will be getting their first taste of playoff hockey. It's a mismatch series for the Ducks and they'll be tested heavily with the Avalanche squad

The Ducks will need Trevor Zegras to work his magic and John Gibson to play the type of hockey he did years ago in the Getzlaf-Perry days of Anaheim. Is it possible? Yes. Is it going to be difficult for those things to go right? One hundred percent

Prediction - Colorado in 5 Games

<p style="line-height:1.7">Finishing the regular season with stellar records of 47-26-9 and 49-30-3, respectively, the Jets secured the 2nd spot in the Central, while the Wild claimed 3rd place.

The Jets' offensive powerhouse, led by breakout star Kyle Connor, enters the postseason with momentum. Connor's sensational 101-point season, the second-highest in the league, makes him a player to watch. On the other end, the Wild boast the league's best defensive record, allowing only 2.72 goals per game. Filip Gustavsson's stellar performance in net, boasting a remarkable 42-19-2 record, positions him as a Vezina Trophy frontrunner.

However, the Wild will face a significant challenge as their rising star, Matt Boldy, will be sidelined until May 9th due to a concussion, casting a shadow over Minnesota's offensive depth.

Will the Jets' offensive firepower break through the Wild's formidable defense, or can Minnesota's balanced approach shut down Winnipeg's high-flying attack?

Prediction - Winnipeg in 7 Games

<p style="line-height:1.7"> All the way back on January 11th vs the LA Kings, Panthers fans were heartbroken to hear that their star Finnish center Aleksander Barkov would be out for the rest of the regular season due to a severe MCL Sprain. Without their franchise center, playoff hopes looked slim. Alas the Florida Panthers squeaked in by the hair of their chin, tying their rival Tampa Bay Lightning in points but coming ahead in the tiebreaker. But with that comes the matchup with the dominant Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes enter the postseason boasting an impressive regular-season record of 52-26-4 and wielding the NHL's most potent offense, averaging an outstanding 3.85 goals per game. This offensive prowess sets them apart, with the 2nd-best team trailing at 3.55 goals per game. Led by an ensemble cast of skillful forwards, Carolina is well-positioned to test the Panthers' defensive resilience. That’s not what you wanna hear when Barkov is still not expected to return for another 2-3 weeks. Sam Reinhart also went down with a sprained ankle in Game 79 of the season so he may not make an appearance in this series until Game 4. It will take practically a miracle for Florida to win this round one matchup... but they've done it before haven't they

Prediction - Carolina in 4 Games

<p style="line-height:1.7"> The New Jersey Devils and the Philadelphia Flyers are set to renew their playoff rivalry in the 2024 NHL Playoffs. The Devils, boasting an impressive season record of 50-27-5 and securing the 4th spot in the NHL standings, are entering the postseason with a lineup that oozes elite depth scoring. With three lines loaded with offensive firepower, the Devils are a force to be reckoned with, ready to capitalize on any defensive lapses.

On the other side of the ice, the Philadelphia Flyers have defied expectations with a season record of 44-30-8, clinching the 3rd spot in the highly competitive Atlantic Division. The Flyers weren't initially pegged as contenders this season, but their resilience and tenacity have propelled them into the postseason spotlight. The matchup against the Devils promises to be a clash of contrasting narratives, with the Flyers looking to prove that they belong among the league's elite.

These two teams last met in the playoffs during the 2012 Conference Finals, a hard-fought series that saw the Devils emerge victorious in five games. Memories of that intense battle still linger, adding an extra layer of anticipation to this latest postseason showdown.

Prediction - New Jersey in 6 Games

<p style="line-height:1.7"> In a clash of contrasting stories, the Vancouver Canucks and the Dallas Stars are poised to go head-to-head in what promises to be a captivating first-round matchup. The Canucks, having clinched the top spot in the Pacific Division with a season record of 48-24-10, have reinvigorated their fan base after a string of disappointing seasons. The question on everyone's mind – can the Canucks turn regular-season success into playoff triumph?

On the other side of the ice, the Dallas Stars, with a formidable season record of 46-29-7, are looking to build upon last year's Conference Final loss. With memories of their 2020 Cup Finals appearance still fresh, the Stars have their sights set on another deep playoff run. The hunger for redemption and the taste of championship glory drives the Stars as they aim to make amends for falling short in recent years.

What sets this series apart from others is the absence of a bitter history between the Canucks and Stars. Unlike some heated playoff rivalries, these two teams don't carry a lot of bad blood. This lack of animosity, however, adds a layer of excitement to the matchup, as it provides the potential for the birth of a new, intense rivalry on the playoff stage.

As the puck drops and the Vancouver Canucks and Dallas Stars embark on this first-round journey, fans can expect a series filled with uncertainty, potential breakout performances, and the possibility of a new chapter in playoff history being written

Prediction - Vancouver in 7 Games

<p style="line-height:1.7"> In a highly anticipated first-round showdown, the Edmonton Oilers and Vegas Golden Knights are set to reignite their playoff rivalry. The Oilers, boasting a season record of 46-30-6 and securing the 2nd spot in the Pacific Division, are hungry for redemption after falling short in last year's postseason.

The Vegas Golden Knights, with a season record of 44-30-8, finished just two points behind the Oilers in the Pacific Division standings. Adding an extra layer of intrigue to this clash is the much-anticipated sequel of the Jack Eichel versus Connor McDavid saga. In the previous playoffs, Vegas emerged victorious in six games against the Oilers, propelling them to the Conference Finals and eventually the Stanley Cup. The stage is now set for round two, with both Eichel and McDavid leading their respective teams into a battle of skill, speed, and determination.

Memories of the contentious clash between these teams last playoffs, particularly the slash by Alex Pietrangelo on Oilers' star Leon Draisaitl in Game 4, still linger. The Oilers and their fans won't easily forget, setting the stage for a series with an undercurrent of bad blood. As the Oilers look to avenge last year's defeat, the Golden Knights aim to prove that they have the formula to continue their success against their Pacific Division rivals.

Prediction - Edmonton in 7 Games

<p style="line-height:1.7"> The Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montreal Canadiens find themselves pitted against each other once again in the first round of the 2024 NHL Playoffs. Memories of their last postseason clash in 2021, where the Canadiens pulled off a dramatic upset in a seven-game series, loom large as both teams gear up for another intense battle.

The echoes of the 2021 playoffs still resonate in the minds of Leafs and Canadiens fans alike. Montreal, the underdogs, emerged victorious, stunning the hockey world and dashing Toronto's Cup aspirations. Heading into this playoff matchup, both teams are grappling with crucial injuries to key players. Toronto's star defenseman Morgan Reilly, a linchpin in their blue line, will be sidelined until May 6th, which could have significant implications for the Leafs' defensive structure, especially in the early games of the series. On the Canadiens' side, the absence of David Savard on defense and Jake Allen between the pipes until May 2nd and May 17th, respectively, raises questions about Montreal's ability to weather the storm against Toronto's high-powered offense. On paper, the Toronto Maple Leafs appear to be heavy favorites. Boasting a potent offensive lineup led by Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, and John Tavares. Yet, as the old adage goes, the playoffs are a different beast. The Montreal Canadiens, seemingly playing the underdog role once again. In a recent interview, Leafs' captain John Tavares acknowledged the significance of facing the Canadiens again: "The past is the past, but we can't ignore the motivation that comes from what happened in 2021. We're a different team now, and we've learned from those experiences. We're focused on taking it one game at a time and not underestimating our opponent." The storyline of redemption for the Leafs and the possibility of another Canadiens upset adds a layer of intrigue to this matchup. The absence of key players on both sides only intensifies the drama, setting the stage for a series that will undoubtedly be watched with bated breath by fans across the league

Prediction - Toronto in 5 Games

Canucks Pull out a Win in Overtime in Game 1
By Russell Dawson / Vancouver Canucks
April 21, 2024
<p style="line-height:1.7">DeSmith would, as most people expected, got the start over Thatcher Demko in the awaited Game 1.

Down 2-0 heading into the third, J.T. Miller scores halfway through the period to cut the lead to one. It would take until the 2:23 mark of the 3rd period before Rookie sensation Arshdeep Bains would bury the tying goal past Oettinger. This game was headed to sudden-death overtime in the very first game

Just 45 seconds into OT Jason Robertson was accessed a Slashing penalty against Brock Boeser in the offensive zone. With such a giant opportunity, the Canucks would convert on the PP with a mid-air bat in goal from Elias Pettersson off of a Quinn Hughes point shot that rebounded off of Oettinger.

A great start for the Canucks as they will play Game 2 in a couple days to try and make it a 2-0 series lead.

Vancouver Scores 6 on the Stars, Head to Dallas with a 2-0 Series Lead
By Russell Dawson / Vancouver Canucks
April 23, 2024
<p style="line-height:1.7">Just before the end of a quiet first period, Arshdeep Bains scores with 19 seconds left above the glove of the outstretched Oettinger.

This momentum would lead into the second period as Hoglander would pot one before Bains scored his 3rd goal of the playoffs in just 5 periods. After two periods Dallas would reman without a goal thanks to Casey DeSmith.

In the third, once again the Canucks came out hot, scoring two goals (Hoglander and Joshua) within 3 minutes into the period. After that it was pretty much game over with Faksa and Seguin breaking DeSmith's shutout attempt before Pettersson potted one more to put the game to rest.

Vancouver heads to Dallas with a 2-0 series lead. Gavin Beyreuther (DAL) would suffer and undisclosed injury in this game to make matters worse for the Stars

Playoff Storylines to Watch
<p style="line-height:1.7">
Arshdeep Bains on FIRE
There was reports of lava being spotted in Vancouver but it was really just Arshdeep Bains... This guy is not from this planet. After two games against the Stars and two wins, Bains has 3 goals and 1 assist to lead the team in points. He's scored on every shot he's got to the net so far and is playing the third most minutes among Canucks forwards. It looks like the sky is the limit for this kid

Maple Leafs Goaltending Struggles
Allowing a combined 16 goals against after two games in a series is mind boggling. Both Joseph Woll and Ilya Samsonov have completely let down the team playing in front of them. The Maple Leafs themselves have scored 11 goals through two games which nine times out of ten should result in two wins. Instead, their down 2-0 in the series and the Maple Leafs will have to head to the Bell Centre to try and wrangle themselves back into this series. Calling it a tall task would be a major understatement

Scrappy Ducks giving the Avalanche a fight
Probably the biggest underdogs in the entire NHL Playoffs, the Anaheim Ducks have lost both games of their series against the Avs by one goal. With such a young and inexperienced team to be taking a team like Colorado to the brink through two games, it has been impressive to watch. We'll have to see if the Ducks will finally be able to pull out a win against MacKinnon and his squad

Dallas Bounces Back with 5 Goal Performance to get First Win of the Series
By Russell Dawson / Vancouver Canucks
April 25, 2024
<p style="line-height:1.7">Injured in the previous game, Gavin Beyreuther will officially be out until April 30th with injured ribs, likely not returning until a hypothetical Game 5.

Conor Garland has the Canucks out to a hot start for Game 3 as he buries top left just 12 seconds into the game. Matt Duchene would tie it up in the last 4 minutes of the opening frame.

Trade Deadline pickup Chris Tanev would get Vancouver out to a 2-1 lead and it looked like the team would head into the third period with the lead until Joe Pavelski had different plans. With just 40 seconds left in the 2nd period, the almost 40 year old fired a wrister over the pad and under the blocker of Casey DeSmith. It would be 2 all heading into the third period with shots practically even (20 For VAN / 19 For DAL).

Things fell apart for the Canucks in the third period as Duchene would pot his second of the night less than a minute in. After the Canucks failed to capitalize on two different powerplays, Pavelski would also score his second of the game, putting the Stars up by two. With Oettinger shutting the door the Canucks were unable to find the back of the net again. Thatcher Demko would play the last 8 and a half minutes of the third period, stopping all four shots he faced

Edmonton will need to find their goal scoring touch if they want to get back in this series. Stuart Skinner has been good in net and Edmonton needs to get there superstars going to take advantage of it

Oettinger blanks the Canucks with a 40 Save Shutout, Ties Series at 2-2
By Russell Dawson / Vancouver Canucks
April 27, 2024
<p style="line-height:1.7">Deciding who was going to be the starting goaltender for the Canucks tonight was on the forefront of everyone's mind heading into this one. Head Coach Bear Schenn decided to go back to Casey DeSmith and trust him to get the Nucks up 3-1 in this series.

Despite coming out to a flying start, the first period would remain goalless with shots in favour of Vancouver 16-6.

Until the 14:45 mark of the second it was much of the same with 0 goals until Tyler Seguin broke past DeSmith. That opened the floodgates as Radek Faksa and Ty Dellandrea would both score to finish out the period, all goals scored on the blocker side of DeSmith. The Canucks found themselves down 3-0 despite a 29-17 lead in shots.

Vancouver could just not solve Jake Oettinger as they continued to pile on the shots, finishing with 40 to the Stars 24. Evgeni Dadanov would score a fourth goal past DeSmith with just under 3 mins remaining in the game to erode any chance of a Nucks comeback.

Jason Robertson Scores a Hat Trick as Dallas Wins 5-3
By Russell Dawson / Vancouver Canucks
April 29, 2024
<p style="line-height:1.7">Game 5 saw some lineup changes for the Canucks. Thatcher Demko would make his playoff debut with Casey DeSmith taking to the bench after two lackluster performances in net. Arshdeep Bains would also be moved to the third line in favour of Ilya Mikyehev after the former first line of Bains-Petey-Boeser was a -2 in the last game.

Both teams came out firing for this one at Rogers Arena as Miller would open the scoring before Seguin and Robertson x2 would score before the halfway mark of the first. Following that, Filip Hronek would bomb one in from the point and Andrei Kuzmenko would get a lucky one that hit a Dallas defender in net and slide past the unready Jake Oettinger. It was a 3-3 score after just 20 minutes of play.

The second was much different with pesky Jason Robertson netting his hat trick goal at the 15:12 mark of the second. The Canucks were unable to find twine during the second and head into the third down by one and a looming 3-2 series deficit over their heads.

The Canucks would continue to pile on the shots in the third but Oettinger had an answer for them every single time. You could see the looks on the Canucks players faces as they just could not beat the American star. With their goalie pulled defenseman Nils Lundkvist was able to hit the empty net goal with 50 seconds left to give the Stars a devastating 5-3 lead. Vancouver would finish with 39 shots on goal in the contest, outshooting Dallas once again who had 33

Canucks Stay Alive and Force Game 7 in an Incredible Win
By Russell Dawson / Vancouver Canucks
May 1, 2024
<p style="line-height:1.7">With their backs against the wall Coach Schenn decided to really shake up the lineup to try and spark this dried up offense. J.T. Miller would join Petey and Boeser on L1 and reunite the Lotto Line. Jenner would move to L2 and center Kuzie and Garland. The best fourth line in the regular season would finally break apart with Lafferty heading to L3 with Mikheyev and Hoglander on his flanks. Joshua would move to center on the fourth with Di Giuseppe on his left and Arshdeep Bains (who has been deathly quiet since his hot start) on his right. On Defense the Hronek and Hughes pairing that dominated the season would be split with Tanev joining Hughes on the top pair and Hronek moving to the second pair. And finally, probably the most controversial of all those changes was Thatcher Demko was going to again be named the starter for this deciding Game 6. Will all these changes even matter? Only time will tell.

Similar to Game 4, the opening period was scoreless with shots in favour of Dallas 10-7. Vancouver was able to kill of two hooking penalties from Garland and Tanev. It was such a battle of a game to this point with neither team giving an inch.

Unfortunately for Canucks fans Sam Steel would break the goose egg and score with 4:48 left in the second period. Vancouver was unable to score to finish out the frame and it would come down to what could be the the final 20 minutes of the Canucks season.

Arshdeep Bains would take an uncalled for interference penalty early into the third and the Stars would capitalize with Robertson scoring on the Powerplay. Down 2-0 with 15 minutes left, Vancouver needed to bare down if they wanted to keep their season alive.

Alas, Elias Pettersson would be the one to get it started for the Nucks. It was one Oettinger should of had as Petey sniped it from the goal line over the right shoulder. But they don't ask how, they ask how many, don't they. The big opportunity they were waiting for came when Dadanov took a tripping penalty on Chris Tanev. Just seconds into the 5-on-4 Radek Faksa would practically punch Boone Jenner in the face off the faceoff, resulting in almost a full 2 minute 5v3 for the Canucks Powerplay.
<p style="line-height:1.7">
They had chances galore on the man advantage, Hoglander just missed the open net on a one tee from Hughes. Petey swung and missed on a rebound with Oettinger out of position. There was even a partial breakaway from Bains that Otter kicked aside. Canucks fans were on the very edge of their seat ready to explode. Finally with the PKers tired and looking to change, the first unit forwards of Petey, Mikheyev and Joshua burst up the ice. Petey carried it wide on Hakanpaa who had just stepped off the bench and flat footed. He speeded past the finnish defender and saw Oettinger committing to a shot. With Joshua and Mikheyev busting to the net everyone jumped to their feet...

... but almost in slow motion you could see Heiskanen was in the lane for a pass to Joshua and Mikheyev was too far behind. So what does Petey do? He slips the triangle under the stick of the Finish D-Man and it slides right to Joshua who drops to one knee and fires the tying goal home. What a moment for the Canucks faithful!
<p style="line-height:1.7">
And after all that they were still on the Power Play. With the boys buzzing they started off hot with a 3 on 2 opportunity that resulted in a block shot. The Canucks recovered and continued to work it around to find openings. They found one when Heiskanen and Hakanpaa got tangled up with Petey and it left Mikheyev all alone in front. Joshua fired him a pass and Mikheyev spun to his backhand but Oettinger made the difficult save. Dallas would get it and clear. Joshua made a rush up the ice but turned it over to Wyatt Johnston who started breaking down the ice. He found himself against Miller and tried to burn him wide... It didn't work out well for him:
<p style="line-height:1.7">
Miller laid a crushing bodycheck on the up and coming star which got the Nucks the puck back. Quickly they rushed up the ice and low and behold Joshua and Miller found themselves on a two on one versus Lindell. Lindell took away JT for a pass and Joshua fired a hard shot off the right pad of Oettinger which forced him to hit the splits... Where does the rebound land? Right on the stick of Miller. Past the outstretched Oettinger Miller flicked his wrists and fired it into the yawning cage. 3-2 Canucks!!!

<p style="line-height:1.7">
But this wasn't exactly a fever dream for Vancouver. Just after the faceoff after the goal Pettersson would take a questionable tripping penalty on Roope Hintz. Dallas was heading to the Power Play and American Airlines Center was going nuts. Dallas pushed hard and it looked like Matt Duchene was gonna tie things up when he had Demko beat... But he fired it off the Post!
<p style="line-height:1.7">
Dallas would recover and feed Heiskanen at the point. Boone Jenner leaped at Miro and poked it off his stick. He had a breakaway! With Stars players hot on his tail deadline addition Jenner busted down the ice with a full head of steam. He faked to his backhand then roofed it over the blocker of Oettinger. 4-2 Canucks! This was a fever Dream!

Robertson would be able to score with 3 minutes left but not long after Dallas would take some bad penalties and Hoglander would make them pay with a 5 on 3 goal. 5-3 Canucks. With the goalie pulled Boone Jenner would catch an errant pass and fire it home to ice this incredible game!

And to only make it more embarrassing for Toronto fans is the fact they lost to a goalie that based off his numbers and age, probably shouldn't be a starting goaltender in the NHL. Full credit goes to Tyler Brennan however. After allowing more than 5 goals for the first 4 games of this series, he dialed in and only allowed a combined 5 in his last two. Vancouver Defeats Dallas in Game 7, Move on to Round Two
By Russell Dawson / Vancouver Canucks
May 3, 2024
<p style="line-height:1.7">This is what you play the game for. Moments like these. Game 7's. Rogers Arena, Vancouver, Canada. Lets GO.

The Canucks were slow out the gates with Dallas dominating early. Matt Duchene scored off the rush on Demko to get the Stars on the board. Jamie Benn would capitalize just before the halfway point on the Power Play after a Joshua hooking penalty. Vancouver would fail to score in the 1st and finish down in shots 17-9. Not the start the Canucks needed.

They needed a pushback here for the second.. and they got it. Sam Lafferty scored from the half wall just a minute and a half in and the crowd turned electric. Through tons of traffic in front of the net, Lafferty floated one in from the boards and it found the back of the net. This seemed to give the team the life it needed as Joshua would snipe a wrister past Oettinger just 3 minutes later. After that, both teams really locked it down to end the frame as shots were still in the Stars favor, 27-21.

This could be it. 20 minutes left of regulation play before a possible Overtime. These two teams battled and grinded for almost half the period. Back and forth toughness as the shots got closer, 32-29 in favor of Dallas. Then Finnish forward Roope Hintz was called for a hooking penalty right beside the Canucks net. What an opportunity here for the Nucks. The first unit headed out there and disappointingly didn't get much going. Then came the second unit. They worked it around the offensive zone until Boone Jenner opened himself up by the edge of the circle to the left of the net. Nils Hoglander fed him a beautiful pass and Jenner hammered the puck into the top right corner! 3-2 Canucks! Rogers Arena erupted with cheers.

Vancouver continued to ramp up after the PP goal and the energy from the building fuelled them. They hemmed in the Stars and Tyler Seguin was forced to take a hooking penalty as well, the Canucks were going back to the Power Play. Again they had a rough start to the man advantage with Dallas gaining control of the puck and even managing a shot on net. Alas, after regaining the offensive zone, Nils Hoglander found himself and the puck at the bottom of the right faceoff circle courtesy of the rookie Arshdeep Bains. He fired it far side under the glove and over the pad of Otter. 4-2 Canucks!! Vancouver fans knew all they needed to do was lock it down and finish this game out. What they didn't expect was Conor Garland to find the puck on his stick on a partial breakaway after a 3 on 2 rush. With how he's been playing this postseason, you knew he was scoring. 5-2 Vancouver and they're headed to round 2

2024 1st Round Playoff Review and Predictions Recap

By Vincent Barlow 2h Ago

<p style="line-height:1.7">The first round of this years playoffs has finished and now after seeing such great hockey be played, we take a look back at what went down in each series. We'll also be taking a look at how our predictions held up and tracking our picks with a point system. I'll explain that system below:

- You get a point for every number of games off you are. If you're exactly right, you get zero points. Zero points is what you want.
- If you picked Vancouver in 7, and Dallas won in 7, that's 2 points, because you're off one game for each team.
- If you picked Canucks in 7, and they win in 6, that's one point.
- If you picked Canucks in 7 and they won in a sweep, that's 3 points.
- Let's see if you understand the system. You picked Canucks in 7. Let's say they lost in 5. How many points is that? (Yes, that's right, it's 4 points, good job, I think you've got it now)
- You must be thinking by now, you can game the system by playing it safe and calling everything for 7 games. Not so! Getting the winner right is still very important.
- In addition, to encourage boldness, if you pick a sweep and get it right, that's a birdie. You get -1 points. So if you believe it's a sweep, call it a sweep! Don't hedge your bets and say 5 games.

Feel free to join in on the fun if you wish, I'll track everyone's predictions and reveal the winner by the end of the playoffs! But now let's get back to the series recaps and we'll tally up our prediction results at the end.

<p style="line-height:1.7">The New Jersey Devils and the Florida Panthers are set to collide in the second round of the 2024 NHL Playoffs, each coming off impressive victories in the opening round.

The Devils swept aside the Philadelphia Flyers in a dominant four-game series. Powered by their potent offensive arsenal, led by the dynamic trio of Jesper Bratt, Jack Hughes, and Tyler Toffoli, the Devils overwhelmed their opponents with an onslaught of scoring prowess. Now, their high-flying offense faces a formidable challenge in the form of Sergei Bobrovsky, the backbone of the Panthers' defense.

Meanwhile, the Panthers continued their postseason success by once again toppling the Carolina Hurricanes, proving that their playoff run last year was no fluke. Spearheading their charge is goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, who has been nothing short of sensational between the pipes with a remarkable .936 save percentage and a stingy 2.00 goals-against average. However, Florida's success cannot rely solely on Bobrovsky's heroics; they'll need secondary scoring contributions from throughout the lineup to overcome the Devils' offensive onslaught.

With the stage set for a thrilling showdown, fans can expect a series filled with intensity and drama.

My Prediction - New Jersey in 6 Games

<p style="line-height:1.7"> In a highly anticipated second-round matchup, the Colorado Avalanche and the Winnipeg Jets are set to clash for the first time in Stanley Cup Playoff history. Fresh off their respective victories in the opening round, both teams are primed for a showdown that promises to be nothing short of electrifying.

The Avalanche made quick work of the Anaheim Ducks in round one, dispatching them in just five games. However, their star-studded lineup, led by Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen, surprisingly struggled to find their offensive rhythm against Anaheim. Instead, it was the unexpected heroes like Ryan Johansen and Artturi Lehkonen who stepped up, leading the charge with impressive point totals.

On the other side, the Jets battled their way past the Minnesota Wild in six hard-fought games. Fueling their success was the stellar play of Kyle Connor, who continued his scoring spree into the postseason, racking up an impressive 10 points in the opening round. However, the true X-factor for Winnipeg lies between the pipes with Connor Hellebuyck. With a .920 save percentage thus far, Hellebuyck's goaltending prowess could prove to be the difference-maker against the powerhouse Avalanche.

Will Colorado's star-studded lineup find their scoring touch against the resolute Jets defense? Or will Winnipeg's dynamic offense, led by Kyle Connor, continue to soar against a formidable Avalanche defense?

<p style="line-height:1.7"> The Vancouver Canucks and the Edmonton Oilers are set to clash in what promises to be a thrilling showdown. Fresh off hard-fought victories in the opening round, both teams are eager to continue their quest for postseason glory.

The Oilers punched their ticket to the second round with a hard-fought six-game series victory over the defending Stanley Cup Champion Vegas Golden Knights. Led by the dynamic duo of Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid, who ramped up their play towards the end of the series, the Oilers showcased their offensive firepower. Not to be overlooked are contributions from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Zach Hyman, who provided valuable secondary scoring. However, it was goaltender Stuart Skinner who emerged as the real MVP for Edmonton, boasting a stellar .922 save percentage and standing tall between the pipes when it mattered most.

Meanwhile, the Canucks battled their way past the Dallas Stars in a grueling seven-game series that saw them overcome adversity. Despite blowing a 2-0 series lead, Vancouver displayed resilience and determination, storming back from a 3-2 deficit to emerge victorious. With depth scoring spread throughout the lineup, the Canucks proved their ability to match up well against formidable opponents. Now, their focus shifts to containing the offensive juggernauts of Edmonton in Draisaitl and McDavid.

As the Canucks and Oilers prepare to face off the question remains, can Vancouver's defensive prowess shut down Edmonton's dynamic duo, or will the Oilers' offensive firepower prove too much to handle?

<p style="line-height:1.7"> In a clash that ignites the flames of one of hockey's most storied rivalries, the Boston Bruins and the Montreal Canadiens are set to renew their postseason rivalry in the second round. While both teams enter this matchup with convincing first-round victories, the history and intensity between these Original Six franchises promise to elevate this series to another level.

Montreal stunned the hockey world with their upset victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs in a hard-fought six-game series. Spearheaded by their dynamic first line of Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield, who lit up the scoresheet with 10 points each, and bolstered by the impressive contributions of Josh Anderson, the Canadiens demonstrated their offensive prowess against a formidable opponent. However, with goaltender Jake Allen sidelined due to injury, the spotlight falls on Tyler Brennan to deliver quality performances between the pipes against the Bruins.

On the other side, the Bruins dispatched the Buffalo Sabres in a swift four-game sweep, showcasing their trademark blend of skill, grit, and determination. With former Vezina Trophy winner Linus Ullmark guarding the crease and a roster built to excel in playoff hockey, Boston enters this series as a formidable force. With the allure of a historic rivalry fueling their fire, the Bruins are poised to make a statement against their archrivals from Montreal.

As puck drop approaches, anticipation builds for what promises to be a fiercely contested series. With playoff history hanging in the balance, hockey fans are in for a treat as the Bruins and Canadiens renew their age-old rivalry on the grand stage of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Edmonton shuts out the Canucks on Home Ice and Steal Game One
By Russell Dawson / Vancouver Canucks
May 5, 2024
<p style="line-height:1.7">Demko gets the start for Game 1 in this series versus the dangerous Oilers offense.

The first period is a quiet one with 0 goals for either team. Canucks would finish the period outshooting the Oilers 16-9.

The second period was a different story with the Vancouver boy Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scoring the first goal of the series. It was then another play with ties to Vancouver as it was Sam Gagner, the former Canuck, scoring with 3 minutes left in the frame. Edmonton finished the second period with a two goal lead on the Canucks.

It wouldn't get much better for the Vancouver side as Adam Erne scored just 30 seconds into the third to kill the energy in the building. Vancouver would end up being shutout for Game 1 and left fans wondering if Demko would remain their starter for Game 2. The offense however definitely needs to take some of the blame as they not only failed to score a goal, but they also went 0-for-3 on the man advantage. Failing to take advantage of a game where Draisaitl and McDavid failed to register a point may come back to haunt the Canucks

Connor Hellebucyk Injury
After going down in Game 1, rumors swirling say that Connor Hellebucyk could miss the rest of the series with a lower body injury. The American netminder has been a rock in net for Winnipeg so far through these playoffs and will result in Laurent Brossoit being thrown into the starting role. This could severely hurt the Jets chances of winning this series if these reports are true

Injuries aplenty in Game 1 of the Bruins-Canadiens Series
Three notable players were forced to leave Game 1 of the Boston-Montreal series as Linus Ullmark, Nick Suzuki and Kaiden Guhle all did not return. While it’s unknown as of now how much time each player could miss, it’s scary for either team to potentially be missing any one of these guys. Let’s hope all of them will be back as soon as possible

Canadian Teams Devastated With Key Injuries
How Winnipeg and Montreal will be effected and will they be able to recover?
<p style="line-height:1.7">
Jeremy Evans - May 6, 2024

<p style="line-height:1.7">
With four of the eight teams remaining in the NHL Playoffs being Canadian teams, all of Canada had to have been ecstatic with how the first round shook out for their teams... well except for Toronto fans (I can feel your pain and rage through the screen don't worry). That excitement just a few days ago has now turned to shock in how quickly the odds for two teams have changed for the worse. So while Oilers and Canucks fans continue to battle it out, Jets and Canadiens fans are in each others arms with tears producing a puddle at their feet

It started for Jets fans in Game 1 when Connor Hellebucyk was unable to finish the contest, which ended up being a win. It was reported as a lower body injury and occurred after stretching across in an attempt to make a save. He was clearly in pain afterwards and would not return. Jets faithful prayed their star goalie, who has been their #1 guy since 2017, wouldn't be out for long as their chances of winning this series is slim at best without him. The prayers were eventually answered... just not in a positive way.

<p style="line-height:1.7">Crushing news for Winnipeg as they will now thrust Laurent Brossoit into the starting role against the lethal Colorado Avalanche. With 9 playoff games to his name, the 31 year old netminder got into 8 games last year for the cup winning Golden Knights last postseason. He finished with a 5-2 record with a .894 save percentage. Not exactly confidence inducing numbers. With a one game series lead, the Jets aren't out of this series just yet. They have arguably the best player in the regular season this year in Kyle Connor along with a great supporting cast of Scheifele, Ehlers and Morrissey. Will it be enough to deflect the onslaught that will be brought by Nate Dogg and the Avs? I wouldn't put money on it

Then of course we come to the Montreal Canadiens. They completed the biggest upset of round one when the defeated the Maple Leafs and were ready to go to battle in one of the biggest rivalries in hockey. Canadiens versus Bruins. You expected this series to be one of the more grittier and exciting matchups of round two and Game 1 did not disappoint those assumptions. Both teams were effective in their physicality as every player was throwing their weight around. The Big Bad Bruins were just more effective at it as they secured a 5-2 victory despite losing Linus Ullmark mid-game (another star player that was injured early in round 2). While Kaiden Guhle was forced to leave due to a David Pastrnak shot off the foot, it was Nick Suzuki that was a casualty of the Boston aggressiveness. Caught in the trolley tracks on a rush up the ice, Trent Frederic caught the Canadiens captain with a crushing hit that sent him crashing hard onto the ice. As TD Garden went nuts after the hit, Suzuki groggily found his way to the bench and down the tunnel. Of course you wanted to hope for the best for these two guys but the news of their status came courtesy of TSN just a day later

<p style="line-height:1.7">Not only are you down 1-0 in the series, your now without your captain and best young defenseman. Suzuki wound up suffering a concussion while Guhle fractured his ankle. Montreal will now need to dip into the Laval Rockets roster for injury replacements in an attempt to replace these two key guys. They already completed a miraculous series win in round one, will they be able to do it again in round two without Suzuki and Guhle. I'm going to be the bearer of bad news and say no chance. I believe they are in an even worse spot than the Jets because of how heavily they rely on these two players. It's looking like their run through these playoffs will be coming to an end.

Canucks will Head to Edmonton with a 1-1 Series Tie, Secure a 3-1 Win in Game 2
By Russell Dawson / Vancouver Canucks
May 7, 2024
<p style="line-height:1.7">After a poor offensive showing in Game 1 the Canucks needed to come out firing in this game. Falling down 2-0 in this series and having to head to Edmonton for Game 3 is not an option

That they did as noted goal scorer Chris Tanev hit the back of the net less than two minutes in while Ilya Mikheyev got his first of the postseason at the 13:23 minute mark.

The 2nd period was back and forth before Nils Hoglander scored from the slot to make it 3-0. 4th liner Adam Erne would be able to get the Oilers their first goal just over a minute later but that would be all for the period. The Canucks entered the third up 3-1 but down in shots 26-18.

The third period saw Vancouver play some incredible defensive hockey, not giving the Oilers an inch and allowing just 6 shots the entire 20 minutes. Praise goes to Thatcher Demko for bouncing back after a disappointing Game 1 that saw some fans calling for DeSmith to play.

Also worth noting was Mattias Janmark played just 5 minutes before leaving the game due to an apparent injury. No word yet on the official diagnosis.

Canucks Steal a Win in Edmonton Despite Connor McDavid's Three Point Performance
By Russell Dawson / Vancouver Canucks
May 9, 2024
<p style="line-height:1.7">As the series shifts to Edmonton the battle of Rogers begins at Rogers Place in Edmonton, the inferior stadium of course.

Quinn Hughes would snipe his first goal of the playoffs almost 5 minutes into the first with a laser from the high slot. It would be Sam Gagner that would tie it up with a shot in a similar spot to Quinn's goal. The score would remain 1-1 through the first with shots 12-9 Vancouver. Something to note was Andrei Kuzmenko played just one shift during the first and was not on the bench for the second. Something to keep an eye on for sure.

To start the 2nd, it was none other than Connor McDavid who would score his first of the series after an incredible rush up the ice that resulted in a breakaway goal. Canucks would have their own star center Elias Pettersson score to tie it up just a minute later with another goal line goal, something he's starting to gain a reputation for one would think. These two teams would be deadlocked at 2 a piece as we head into the 3rd period.

Of course if he was gonna score one he was going to score two as McDavid fired a wrister over the glove of Demko to make it 3-2 Oilers. Vancouver kept fighting to try and tie the game up but Stuart Skinner was standing strong in net. That was until Carson Soucy fired a seeing eye wrist shot on net which hit the back bar past Skinner and effectively tying the game at 3! At this point you almost just wanted to get to the overtime frame but the Canucks had other ideas. Boone Jenner fired what looked like an easy save on net but it hit a defenseman in front and slid under the pad of Skinner! 4-3 Canucks with just under 4 minutes remaining. Head Coach Bear Schenn had the Nucks play some real tight defensive hockey, allowing the Oilers to get just two shots after the Jenner goal, giving Vancouver the win and the 2-1 series lead.

Thatcher Demko and the Canucks heading back to Vancouver with 2 Wins and a 3-1 Series Lead
By Russell Dawson / Vancouver Canucks
May 11, 2024
<p style="line-height:1.7">Andrei Kuzmenko was ruled out for Game 4 due to an abdominal strain. As a result Vasili Podkolzin would be called up and be given a huge opportunity on the second line alongside Jenner and Garland. Garland would swing to the left side so Podzy can play his natural right wing.

It's a big Game 4 for both clubs as Edmonton looks to even the series while the Canucks want to take a commanding 3-1 series lead.

Leon Draisaitl opens the scoring on a 5-on-4 Power play courtesy of a Conor Garland slash. J.T. Miller would eventually tie it up with under 5 minutes remaining off of a rebound. Another almost eery thing to note was Arshdeep Bains left the game after his first shift, almost having identical time on ice to Kuzmenko last game. It will be interesting to see what the diagnosis is for his ailment. Edmonton headed into the second with double the shots of Vancouver and momentum on their side from the energetic Oilers fanbase at Rogers Place.

However it was Christopher Tanev who scored, his second of the series, to make it 2-1 VAN and it would stay that way until the end of the period despite the Oilers doubling the Nucks in shots 30-14. The team just needed one more solid period from Demko and they'd be loving life headed back to Vancouver.

The Canucks came out on the offense in the third despite leading by one but it worked as Conor Garland scored to give a two goal lead to the good guys. Canucks fans went crazy when they realized Vasili Podkolzin had the primary assist on the goal, his first NHL playoff point of his career. Edmonton was stifled in the third as once again Bear Schenn had his team play tight and defensive and it worked, only allowing 5 shots in period number three. Ilya Mikheyev would basically ice the game with 3:57 left in the third after a rebound came out to him in the crease. The Canucks will head back to Rogers Arena for a chance to eliminate the Oilers in Game 5

Jake Allen came back earlier than expected from injury to play in this game and it was noticeable that he was not playing at 100%. He faced over 35 shots and the Canadiens were heavily outplayed. Edmonton Stays Alive with a 3-0 Win and a Stuart Skinner Shutout in Game 5
By Russell Dawson / Vancouver Canucks
May 13, 2024
<p style="line-height:1.7">At the pre game skate today for the Canucks it was shared to the media that Arshdeep Bains suffered a pulled groin last night in Edmonton and will be out until the end of the month. While he hasn't been as good as of late, it's still a blow to the depth scoring of the Canucks. Pius Suter will slot into the lineup and move to the 4th line center spot while Joshua moves to the L4 left wing.

Leon Draisaitl would open the scoring with a powerplay goal from the high slot after Pius Suter took a hooking minor. That would end up being the only goal of the opening frame.

It was all Edmonton in the second as well as Kane and McDavid would up the lead to 3-0. Stuart Skinner was shutting the door and the Canucks were struggling to beat him. Vancouver failed to capitalize on 6 minutes worth of powerplays in the second period.

The Canucks would throw 10 shots on net during the third and would fail to put one past the Oilers, resulting in a 3-0 loss in this one. The powerplay fails to score despite 3 different opportunities, including a four minuter.

It was learned after the game that Sam Lafferty suffered an upper body injury and likely won't be available for Game 6.

Vancouver Moves on to the Western Conference Finals in a High Scoring 7-5 Win
By Russell Dawson / Vancouver Canucks
May 15, 2024
<p style="line-height:1.7">With Kuzmenko back in the lineup the new forward lines looked like: JT-Petey-Boeser, Kuzi-Jenner-Garland, Mikheyev-Suter-Hoglander, PDG-Joshua-Podkolzin.

The first period ends up being an exciting one as both teams traded goals to end up 2-2 after the first period. Zach Hyman got the crowd buzzing early with a snipe from the top of the circles just 59 seconds in. J.T Miller would score right on the doorstep of the Oilers crease to tie it up at one a piece. Due to a Hughes holding minor, Leon Draisaitl would pot one on the powerplay from practically the same spot as Hyman's goal. Conor Garland stays hot and buries one off of a one timer at the 12:00 minute mark.

What was crazy to witness was the second period almost mirror the first. This was definitely the wrong night to be a goalie. Hyman once again opened the scoring in the period on a Powerplay but Petey would strike back just 3 minutes later. Then once again Draisaitl scored to give the Oilers the lead but that didn't last long as Mikheyev buried one just 28 seconds after. What a back and forth battle between these two teams. Tied at 4's, this game was headed to the third period.

Much to the chagrin of Canucks fans, Podkolzin would be called for a high sticking penalty that drew blood. A four minute powerplay awaited one of the most dangerous units in the league. Edmonton had their chances but just could not finish on them as Vancouver killed off a huge penalty. Then it was Nick Ritchie that took a roughing penalty, sending the Canucks PP unit out on the ice. It's been ice cold this series but Canucks fans prayed they could capitalize on this one. Unfortunately this one ended up being like many others... No powerplay goal.... BUT WAIT. One second after the penalty expired Brock Boeser fired home a laser of a wrister past Skinner to make it 5-4 Vancouver!!!

13:17 left in this one as the Canucks look to move onto the Conference Finals for the first time since 2011. Incredibly the Canucks Penalty Kill was dialed as they were able to kill off a Hughes holding and a Jenner interference penalties, despite those two being some of their best when down a man. It was not long after that Mattias Ekholm would be called for his own double minor high sticking, drawing blood from the face of Nils Hoglander. A four minutes Powerplay with 9 minutes remaining. A perfect setup for Vancouver... Or so they thought.

Once again in this series the hometown kid Ryan Nugent-Hopkins would find himself in on a breakaway and score off of a quick snap shot. This game was tied 5-5 with 7 minutes left. It was back and forth hockey after that until controversy struck.

Brock Boeser burst down the wall with speed on Brett Kulak, looking to have a step on him. With his big frame he protected the puck and drove it to the net. On his way there he threw a shot at the net that Skinner stopped with his pads. The puck went past the stick of J.T. Miller and deflected off Janmark's stick, off Boeser's skate and finally past the five hole of the scrambling Skinner. The Canucks threw their arms up in joy but in the corner of their eyes they saw the referee give the no goal sign.
<p style="line-height:1.7">
This one was headed for video review. Once taken a look at it, it appeared Boeser while driving to the net had his forward momentum carry him into Skinner and get a piece of him, possibly distracting him from making a save on the five hole goal. On the other hand, the defenseman in front of the net Desharnais knocked Boeser off balance with a hit before he got to Skinner and nudged him.

This one is too close to call folks... lets see what the referee has to say.... "After video review.. the call on the ice... IS OVERTURNED, WE HAVE A GOOD GOAL"

The Canucks faithful was going wild while Rogers Place booed like there was no tomorrow. No matter how much booing they did it didn't matter. Canucks were up 6-5 with 2:35 left in the 3rd. The team was playing the right way, getting pucks deep when they could and stopping any Oiler rushes against. But all of a sudden, McDavid found Gagner up ice who dished it to Draisaitl. Hughes had tried to pinch up on Gagner but had overcommitted. With Draisaitl heading down the wall with Chris Tanev defending, Gagner was making a beeline for the net. Tanev got a piece of Leon on his initial pass across but not enough as the German recoiled it and fired a sauce pass to the veteran in front. Gagner fired it on a off side one timer.... AND THATCHER DEMKO MAKES AN INCREDIBLE SAVE!!!

That one is going on the highlight reels for sure!!. Gagner can't believe it and neither can Rogers Place. Canucks keep the 6-5 lead with a minute and a half to go. The Canucks continued to rag the puck down low in the Oilers end but Edmonton had one last chance in them. Draisaitl had the puck by the goal line and Hyman took off, catching the Canucks defenders off guard. Leon sent a perfect pass down the ice to hit him and he now had three Canucks on his tail. Skinner was headed to the bench for the extra attacker as Hyman would make it to the dot before he was forced to pull the trigger with J.T. Miller right on him... and Demko makes the save!!

Miller would get the rebound and after an incredible backcheck would head up ice and get just enough around Darnell Nurse to put it into the empty net! 7-5 Canucks. They're headed to the Conference Final!

Panthers Without Matthew Tkachuk for Game 7 against the Devils
Matthew Tkachuk will be unable to help his Panthers in the highly anticipated Game 7 between Florida and New Jersey

Jeremy Evans - May 17th, 2024

<p style="line-height:1.7">They've had two chances to close out this series and now it might be to little to late for the Florida Panthers. News came today that Florida star Matthew Tkachuk will be out of the lineup for the Game 7 against the New Jersey Devils.

<p style="line-height:1.7">While the exact injury was not reported, it has to be a serious one when you take in the fact Tkachuk played through a broken sternum before the Panthers were eliminated last postseason. The American winger has been one of the Panthers top players this series, alongside veteran Corey Perry. He has 7 points through 6 games, including two point performances in his last two games before being injured.

For Florida, losing a guy that is so influential to their scoring prowess hurts for a game where you'll need a player like Tkachuk. They already have not got the depth scoring from their forwards in this series and losing one of their guys that was actually producing is an issue. As an example of their scoring problems, just one forward outside the top two lines has more than one goal these playoffs, that being Sam Bennett.

Sergei Bobrovsky will somehow be relied on even more than he already has with this big injury and the Panthers will need him to continue his performances for at least one more game if they want to continue their hunt for the Stanley Cup

They already have a superstar center in Jack Hughes but now Nico Hischier looks to be stepping into that realm of players. The Swiss center leads playoff scoring with 18 points and has been the Devils best player through two rounds. Could New Jersey be looking at a potential Crosby-Malkin lite center duo for years to come?

<p style="line-height:1.7">In a clash of Eastern Conference heavyweights, the Boston Bruins and the New Jersey Devils are set to collide in the Conference Finals of the 2024 NHL Playoffs, each team eyeing a ticket to the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Bruins have been on an unstoppable tear throughout these playoffs, remaining undefeated and on the brink of making history by potentially breaking the record for the fewest losses in a single playoff run, currently held by the 1987-88 Edmonton Oilers with two. Sweeping both the Buffalo Sabres and the Montreal Canadiens in rounds one and two respectively, Boston has showcased their dominance on both ends of the ice. Leading the charge is goaltender Linus Ullmark, boasting an impressive 7-0 record with a remarkable .938 save percentage and a minuscule 1.74 goals-against average.

On the other side, the Devils emerged victorious in a grueling seven-game series against the Florida Panthers in the second round, with four of the seven games stretching into overtime. The battle-tested Devils proved their resilience and determination, overcoming adversity to advance to the Conference Finals. Now, facing off against the undefeated Bruins, New Jersey looks to bring the heat early and test Boston's mettle.

As puck drop approaches, anticipation builds for what promises to be a thrilling series filled with intensity and drama.

My Prediction - New Jersey in 6 Games

<p style="line-height:1.7"> The Colorado Avalanche and the Vancouver Canucks are set to battle it out in the Conference Finals of the 2024 NHL Playoffs, each team overcoming formidable opponents to earn their spot in this pivotal matchup.

The Avalanche punched their ticket to the Conference Finals with a hard-fought victory over the Winnipeg Jets in six games, although the series took a dramatic turn when Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck was sidelined with an injury after Game 1. Throughout the playoffs, captain Gabriel Landeskog has been a driving force for the Avs, leading all remaining players in points with an impressive tally of 16 while providing invaluable leadership both on and off the ice. With a roster brimming with offensive firepower, including the likes of Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen, the Avalanche pose a difficult challenge for any opponent.

Meanwhile, the Canucks showcased their resilience and determination in overcoming Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers in six hard-fought games. Fueling their success was Conor Garland, who caught fire in the series, recording an impressive seven points to propel Vancouver to victory. In goal, Thatcher Demko has silenced any doubts about his abilities, regaining his starter spot with a solid .916 save percentage through two rounds. However, facing off against the offensive juggernaut of the Avalanche presents a daunting challenge for Demko and the Canucks' defense corps.

As the puck drops on this highly anticipated series, can Demko and the Canucks contain the Avalanche's offensive onslaught, or will Colorado's firepower prove too much to handle?

My Prediction - Vancouver in 6 Games

Florida blew a 3-1 Series lead to Jersey. Meanwhile Boston is coming off 2 Sweeps. Interesting East Final!

Good luck vs Colorado.

Yeah Florida really choked that series away but you have to give New Jersey credit. Getting the wins in the low scoring tight games is crucial and to do it 3 straight times is impressive

I picked New Jersey to win their series against Boston because I don’t think the Bruins have been tested at all yet these playoffs. They ran through Buffalo in Round 1 and then had a depleted Canadiens team in Round 2. New Jersey will already be ready to go Game 1 while Boston might need to find their legs to start the series

Appreciate the luck against Colorado, we’re gonna need it against them!

Canucks Make a Statement to the Avalanche in Game 1 with a 6-3 Win
By Russell Dawson / Vancouver Canucks
May 18, 2024
<p style="line-height:1.7">Finally your Vancouver Canucks are back in the Conference Finals for the first time in more than a decade. They start out in Colorado at Ball Arena for Game 1 against the mighty Avalanche.

Game numero uno gets off to a very hot start with a four goal first period. Lehkonen scored the first of the series on the Powerplay but Brock Boeser would answer back with a goal of his own just 22 seconds later. There wouldn't be another goal until the 2:38 mark when Miles Wood scored his first goal of these playoffs on Demko. But once again the Canucks answered back quickly with Nils Hoglander scoring from the slot just 30 seconds later. Heading into intermission the score remained 2-2.

Half of the period went by with high flying hockey featured all over the rink. Mikko Rantanen would score on a tight angle shot that squeaked by Demko to give Colorado the lead. This time around it took a bit longer but the defenseman Carson Soucy would blast one from the point that would just beat the pad of Georgiev. Then finally with 1:15 remaining in the second, Ilya Mikheyev scored to give the Canucks their first lead of the game. This gave the Nucks a one goal lead heading into the final frame. Would the team be able to lock it down for what could be the final twenty minutes?

It looked that way through the first half as the Avs did get shots to the net but they were from the perimeter. Meanwhile the Canucks were getting high quality scoring chances. Conor Garland continues to be the Canucks MVP so far these playoffs as he scores with 11 minutes left to make it a two goal lead. A crucial goal for Vancouver that makes a comeback for Colorado more difficult. It would get even more difficult when Nils Hoglander would score his second of the game to make it 6-3 Canucks. This one is over. Game 1 goes to Vancouver!
