EA Sports PGA TOUR Impressions (Console)

Seems like trials and early access of this game are beginning to make their way into the wild. So it also seems like a good idea to create a specific thread related to the community's thoughts and feelings about the game.

Looking forward to hearing everyone's impressions...hit 'em straight!

Re: EA Sports PGA TOUR Impressions

Played first round at ANGC with Brooks Koepka.

Graphics are ridiculous… course sounds are on point.

Will take some getting used to the swing mechanic… it doesn’t feel as “fluid” as 2k.

Played on tournament with no modifications and I was +7 on the front 9…

green94 04-03-2023 11:24 AM

Re: EA Sports PGA TOUR Impressions

One other note on the courses… hit one offline at ANGC and to see the ball roll through the fairway and into the first cut and eventually the rough was awesome.

Definitely changed speed and direction the way it should. Course management will be a big factor!

Also, a couple requests...

Could someone:

1) check to see how female golfers are implemented into career mode, or if there is a specific LPGA Tour career mode
2) check to see what the "required" online connection means for career mode

Thank you!

I think it was Apex who said it..

Everything feels too slow

(not a frame rate thing -- just the whole game experience...seems...slooow)

Well, that's playing golf for ya

Re: EA Sports PGA TOUR Impressions

I'm 3 holes in on Tour mode with some aids and power boost turned off. Way, way too easy. I holed a chip from 15 yards off the green on literally my 5th shot. And, right as I hit the ball, the lighting dimmed, and it went into slow motion, basically telling me in advance that my shot was going in. It did.

Very first shots on Tour are going dead straight, even though my approach shot I slipped off the stick and pushed it way to the right, the ball only faded slightly to the right, 15 feet from the hole.

I still haven't figured out how hard to hit it putting but I'm sure I'll figure it out in the next couple of holes. A guy in another thread is playing on Sim with everything turned off and he's saying it's incredibly easy.

Oh boy.

I was a little behind you. Hardest swing settings I could dial up.

Sawgrass - 3rd hole chip in out of the rough -- didn't even aim it and it had way too much speed.

In any other golf game, other than Rory, it would have lipped or popped or something.... not "gone right in the hole".

Re: EA Sports PGA TOUR Impressions

Next hole. 12 yards from the pin, off the green. Chipped it in. That's 2 holes in a row.

And I don't know if it's me but the drives are rolling out in a very strange way. The ball hits the ground, and just rolls and rolls, even uphill.

I'm not bashing here guys, literally 4 holes in and wanting SO BADLY for this game to be incredible. It looks incredible. So far it's very underwhelming to play.

Re: EA Sports PGA TOUR Impressions

My summary thus far:

Gorgeous graphics
Crap performance
Way too easy gameplay

Someone at EA (that dev w/ Apex maybe?) did say a 4 year old could play it.
I didn't think he meant on "the hardest difficulty" though

Re: EA Sports PGA TOUR Impressions

Watching some streams on Twitch - gdog playing the Amateur at St Andrews...

- I have seen caddies
- Commentary is good, but Frank Nobilo gave him a hard time for hitting an approach to...10 feet?
- gdog is knocking everything close...he just hit a "hack shot" with 8-iron from 167 yards out of the "rough" where he had a 100% lie? So no penalty for being off the fairway?

Re: EA Sports PGA TOUR Impressions

Graphics are insane
No way to turn vibration off? Trying through the system settings. Can’t stand it in the backswing.

This may have the best presentation I’ve seen in an ea sports game.

Overall I’m surprised how deep this game is. Hopefully with a day 1 patch it can iron (hehe) up some of the stability issues.

7/10 right now.

Re: EA Sports PGA TOUR Impressions

2 quick cosmetic notes:

-Each golfer has 4 outfits - for brand nerds like me you will be satisfied assuming all of these are user accessible.
-Played Torrey in the morning and there seemed to be some change to the lighting as the round went on - going to look at this more later but it did seem like it went from sunrise to mid morning which is a compromise I’m willing to live with

Re: EA Sports PGA TOUR Impressions

Drives are rolling way too much. I just had a 265 carry, slightly uphill, that rolled 63 more yards(!) after touchdown. Uphill. Sheesh.

I have also noticed that gdog has used the "Finesse" shot type on almost every single hole.

In real golf -- what is a "finesse" shot?

Does one sort of lightly massage the grip?

Sure looks like it's what I could usually call a "pitch" shot...at least it acts like one, with a quick stop and backspin.

Also, he's -6 thru 9. He's driven 3 of the par-4s off the tee due to massive golf ball rollout.

He's playing what he calls the "middle" difficulty, with boost/spin and tracers turned off manually.

Re: EA Sports PGA TOUR Impressions

Turn off controller vibration from the system settings. Swing feels much more fluid albeit still slow.

That's what I was playing, then changed the swing difficulty to "harder". I don't really notice much of a difference yet.

Everything just feels so slow. It's running smoothly and looks great, but the actual swing and just everything about how it feels is...sloooow. I saw something in the beginning when setting my my player about choosing how fast of a swing you prefer. It's on normal now, I'll change it to faster and see if that actually speeds up the actual swing mechanic, or if it just compensates the fast/slow feedback reading after the swing.

Feeling very deflated here...

MrArlingtonBeach 04-03-2023 11:53 AM

Re: EA Sports PGA TOUR Impressions

Switched to another stream...someone was looking at the "Challenges" part of the game.

There are over 500 of them in total, divided into specific events or tours. So, for example, there are LPGA ones, Masters ones, etc.

And I assume they will be adding more of them as new moments happen in real life golf.

Back to gdog...he hit into the rough again at St Andrews and the lie was again 98-100%. That seems really bad and would need to be fixed. There's no penalty for hitting into the rough...Respawn chimed in on the chat of the stream, and he also said he's had no lie of less than 100%, even out of the rough.

Yeah that's gotta be a glitch or something. Why introduce lie % effect if it's not going to be affected by the rough?

Gdog was wondering if it was because this was an amateur event and conditions might be set to super easy?

But yeah, the tall grass having no penalty is silly.

Gdog just had a 267 carry drive end up 355 total...I know it's at the Old Course, but almost 100 yards of roll?

Graphics are incredible, the flyover shots before each hole are absolutely jaw dropping. Commentary and presentation are fantastic as well.

I’m really confused about the impressions on difficultly being too easy, I’m a pretty solid player on 2k, I’ll usually shoot -5 to -10 a round, and I’m really struggling to hit fairways and greens on simulation difficulty right now. I shot +6 at Augusta and +1 at Pebble. If my swing path is off on the swing stick, I’m paying for it. If my down swing is fast, I’m paying for it. This applies to the putting as well. Not really sure how every one is chipping in and holing out every single shot clearly that’s not on simulation difficulty..

PS5.

Does anyone know how to reset the difficulty? It asked me once at the very beginning, I chose Tour, but I want to go to Sim and make everything as hard as possible. I've been in every menu 10 times and can't see how to switch it?

Yeah, seeing multiple takes that it's too easy, and multiple takes that it's too hard lol. So as usual with all video game releases, you won't actually know until you sit down and play the game

I don't have the game and won't for a while, so I can't comment on how it plays or anything.

But to me, personally, shooting +1 or +6 on the hardest difficulty on Day 1 seems very low - I'd expect higher scores than that.

I remember playing Tiger Woods 14 on "sim" settings and shooting around 100 at Sawgrass on release day.

Going to dig into career mode with my CAP shortly.

I’m gonna wait until Friday to get my hands on the game - don’t have a PS5 or Series X yet so I was hoping my PC could handle it until I get one. Hopefully it’s less buggy than people are saying when the full game is out.

Apex released an 18-hole playthrough of Augusta on harder settings though not the hardest still. In it he mentioned 60 FPS on consoles is planned post-launch?

Maybe I'm to picky i dunno.. Everything feels like slow motion and no control over anything.

NO CONTROL over anything is best way to say how i feel about the game. The game feels unresponsive, slow and feels more like a point and click adventure game.

I feel ZERO immersion when swinging the club , especially on shorter shots. Will not be buying sadly. Had high hopes for this game.

Sorry if my feedback offends anyone but its my honest impressions

Courses look...amazing. Presentation is off the charts.

Here's a video of ApexHound playing a round at ANGC as Jason Day. Playing with custom settings, basically tour settings with swing set to hard, and putting to normal.

Tournament course conditions.

https://youtu.be/cAwE1G10cBI

Crowds look unbelievable. Jason Day looks...interesting.

Sure, but it’s not like the mechanics in this game are different from golf games of the past 15 years, so anyone who’s been playing for that long would still be able to shoot somewhat of a competitive score on day one. I was using Spieth and Scheffler on both of those over par rounds as well so I’m sure once I use my created player it’s gonna get even more challenging

This is exactly right. There's no feeling of having anything really to do with shooting other than flicking the stick. I know it's early but this is the kind of stuff that's not likely to change much. You just walk up and shoot. There's no feel to it.

I'm going to cancel my pre order if it's not too late. It shows up in Transactions on the playstation site, but it no longer says cancel. Does anyone know if they kept the pre order cut off date for 2 weeks ago before they delayed 2 weeks? If so, and there's now no way to cancel even though early access isn't until tomorrow, that would really suck.

I'm so bummed. 2 years of waiting for this, reading every post or mention that I could find on it, and at least as it stands right now, a complete flop.

I like the look. I like the sound of the ball in the cup coming from the controller. I like the commentary and presentation.

But I can't find one single thing I like about swinging the club or playing the game. Like you said, it's like a point and click adventure game that just walks you through the "story".

(*!&)!!!!!

All fair points...like I said, it's just a personal feeling.

My round of 25-30 over par in TW 14 was with the GOAT Tiger Woods...haha! Sim in TW 14 had no green grid, no scout cam, diagonal swing, etc. It was a real challenge and required A LOT of practice to get good at it.
