Athlon Sports Preseason Rankings

This was very unexpected but the Hurricanes are ranked #19 by Athlon sports. With 9 ACC all conference players and 2 All-Americans in Brandon Washington and Ray Ray Armstrong. As a die hard cane i didnt expect us to be ranked after a 7-6 season, anyone else confused by this. Any thoughts?

I wouldn't say it's surprising. They have a lot of talent. Shannon was a great recruiter; dude was just clueless when it came to coaching talent. The jury is still out on Golden, but he can't be a worse actual football coach than Shannon.

Re: Athlon Sports Preseason Rankings

Wheres the link?

Also, I think Miami will finished ranked. The ACC looks like it may actually be weaker this year than last, which is sad. I think Miami could potentially reach the Conference Championship with a rematch against FSU. Like Roggie said, Shannon was a good recruiter and kept the kids out of trouble, but nobody got better under him or his staff. Al Golden looks like the perfect fit to me. He has the electricity this team needs desperately and is letting all the former U guys back which I think is important. Al Golden may be a bit worse at recruiting than Shannon, which a lot of guys probably are, but he and his staff will definitely get these kids to get better and better while they're here.

Re: Athlon Sports Preseason Rankings

My impression of Miami the past couple of years under Shannon is that they've had plenty of talent, and pretty good coaching on the defensive side of the ball, but nothing consistent on offense. Part of that is the lack of progression by Jacory Harris, who really hasn't improved since he stepped foot onto campus at Coral Gables IMO.

If Al Golden is the coach I think he is (he was on Virginia'a coaching staff in the early part of the '00s when it looked like we might turn the corner as a football program), then Miami can and will be successful not only this year but down the road.

Shannon was a great recruiter but i'll wait to see how golden does next season before i say Shannon was better. I dont know how golden did at recruiting kids to temple but given the amount of time Golden had to find recruits i think he is doing an excellent job and is still getting recruits. We have a long time before the rest of the college top 25 is ranked by Athlon but i have a feeling that Auburn will be out of the top 5

Re: Athlon Sports Preseason Rankings

I just never understood what happened to the Canes bringing in those scary good TEs. I, from the outside of course, saw that as a weak spot in Shannon's recruiting efforts. Or maybe it was just a development issue. I'll have to go back and look at the recruit ranks for the position while he was there.
