–The announcers welcome the audience to Nitro on the USA Network as they review Scott Steiner retaining the world title at Halloween Havoc the previous night as stills from his win over Diamond Dallas Page are shown and Booker T’s United States title win over Jeff Jarrett, at the expense of a concussion. (72)

–WCW Commissioner Bret Hart comes to the ring and welcomes the San Diego crowd and the audience watching USA Network. Hart announces that the November PPV, Mayhem, will be 20 days from now in Atlanta. He says that there will be a tournament of eight of the WCW’s best to determine a #1 contender for the world title. The winner of the tournament will challenge for the world title at Starrcade. (75) Hart adds that there will be two quarterfinal matches next week on Nitro from Tucson and the following Monday night from Memphis with the semifinals and finals at Mayhem and the matchups will be announced on WCW.com on Wednesday morning. (74)

–Scott Steiner makes his way to the ring and takes the mic from Bret. He taunts Diamond Dallas Page and Goldberg as he says he will keep his word and enter 2002 as the world champion, no matter who wins the #1 contender. (86) Bret tells Steiner his arrogance will be the reason he eventually loses his title. (73)

–Rob Van Dam def. Mark Jindrak in 9:06 by pinfall following the Five Star Splash. (71)

–Goldberg is seen talking to Bret Hart backstage. Hart tells Goldberg that Mayhem is his chance to get the title shot he wants and he will have to earn it like the other seven competitors. (72)

–In another part of the arena, Mean Gene is interviewing Dustin Rhodes. Dustin tells Gene that he thinks he deserves to be considered for the eight-man tournament for the #1 contender. He explains that he is beating the people they match him against and there are several that aren’t eligible. (70)

–Jeff Jarrett comes down to the ring accompanied by Shane Douglas and The Total Package as he talks about his match with Booker T. Double J says that poor Booker T has suffered a concussion and might not be able to defend the US belt in the mandatory 30-day period. (75) WCW Commissioner Bret Hart steps out with a mic and confirms the concussion and since the company’s US champion can’t be here tonight for a title rematch, Jarrett will be rewarded by facing Goldberg later in the show. (77)

–Mean Gene is backstage with Chavo Guerrero Jr, who is delighted at the hurt he inflicted on Kidman last night at Havoc. Chavo says he didn’t care about the title, only injuring Kidman. (53)

–Ernest Miller and Norman Smiley def. Mike Sanders and James Storm in 6:58 by submission after Smiley’s Norman Conquest on Sanders. (58)

–Backstage, a camera catches an ongoing brawl between Team Canada and O’Haire and Nash which several backstage personnel try to break up. (63)

–Dustin Rhodes def. Johnny Swinger in 8:12 by pinfall with a Lonestar State of Mind. (57)

–The Total Package and Shane Douglas are backstage talking, hyping their upcoming tag team match versus Sean O’Haire and Kevin Nash. They also say that what happened to Double J earlier is only a power trip by Commissioner Hart. (61)

–Ric Flair is seen in Bret Hart’s office and pleading his case as the greatest world champion ever and the dirtiest player in the game as reasons to be included in the #1 contender tournament. (83) As he leaves, Sting is standing in the doorway waiting to talk to the commissioner as they both eye each other until Sting closes the door behind him. (86)

–Joey Styles quickly recaps the World TV title match from Havoc, in which Konnan pinned Kanyon to retain the belt. Styles questions if Konnan can keep his momentum going after six successful TV title defences. (68)

WCW World TV Title Match
–Vampiro def. Konnan in 8:47 by pinfall following the Nail in the Coffin. (75) During the match, Kanyon interfered with a chair shot to the back of Konnan as referee Charles Robinson was checking on Vampiro. Vampiro wins the WCW World TV title for the first time.

–After coming back from a break, Scott Steiner is again in the ring with the Big Gold Belt. As Steiner poses for the San Diego crowd, the sound of a crow fills the arena with Sting walking down the ramp to the ring. Steiner gets inches from Sting’s face as the two go back and forth with no mic. (86) Sting takes a mic and tells Steiner to shine up the belt because he has already talked to Bret Hart and he is using his guaranteed title match from the T2 Cup contract tonight on USA for the world title as the crowd erupts and Steiner seethes. (85)

–Kevin Nash and Sean O’Haire def. Shane Douglas and The Total Package in 9:47 by DQ after Team Canada attacked O’Haire and Nash. (75) After the match, the 4-on-1 beatdown continued with O'Haire and Nash lying face down in the ring. (72)

–Goldberg def. Jeff Jarrett in 11:51 by pinfall following a Spear and Jackhammer after Jarrett spent much of the match time outside of the ring avoiding Goldberg. (85) After the match, Goldberg quickly exited the ring to the backstage area. (82)

–Mean Gene is backstage with RVD and Rey Mysterio, as Van Dam hypes his win on Nitro earlier. Van Dam said that last night did not turn out the way he wanted but he and Rey will be a force to be reckoned with in singles and tags down the road. (72)

–Backstage, a camera catches what appears to be the voices of Shane Douglas, Ric Flair, and The Total Package trapped inside their dressing room with Rick Steiner scratching his head and trying to figure out a way to get the door open from the outside. Double J is lying beside the door still holding his ribs from the match with Goldberg. (79)

–Another camera catches Sting in deep thought before his world title match versus Scott Steiner in the main event. (88) Goldberg comes in and tells Sting he will not have to worry about Steiner’s lackeys interfering in his match tonight. (84)

WCW World Heavyweight Title Match
–Sting def. Scott Steiner in 16:23 by submission following the Scorpion Deathlock. (90) During the match, with Goldberg coming down ringside, staring at Steiner with Steiner calling for backup and referee Nick Patrick pleading with Goldberg to leave, DDP slipped in and delivered a Diamond Cutter to Steiner, leading to Sting taking advantage.
