I've never once intentionally looked at it for anything that wasn't sports related*.
I'd be considerably happier if ESPN issued a similar edict and anyone who wanted to do something else would follow suit.
If writers want to be working at Vice or Vox or Mother Jones or whatever then by all means, I think they ought to go do that.
