FIFA 09 Producer Interview: Dave Rutter Part 2

Dave Rutter, Producer Xbox 360 and PS3

Last time I answered questions I wasn’t able to talk about Be A Pro: Online Team Play but I am happy to report now that we will have 10 vs 10 online in the game this year. We were happy with the way 5 vs 5 was received last year and we stated a year ago our key target was to deliver an 11 vs 11 virtual World Cup by 2010. We are pleased to announce we got most of the way there with up to 10 players playing up to 10 player in online team play this year. However, I’m still not able to talk about some of the things we are doing online now because we are saving these big feature announcements for Leipzig.

Here are the answers to a lot of the questions I wasn’t able to get to last time.

1) Do teams use situational tactics (ex. Derby playing Man Utd. or teams in cup games with goal advantages, and so forth) like in Euro 2008?

Rutter: Yes they do. All of the teams in game have a number of pre-set custom team tactics that they can apply during the match depending on time of match and score line. If you are winning, towards the end of match you can go into much more defensive minded positioning if appropriate, and, if you are losing at the end of match your players can step up and press forward to score a goal or two goals if needed.

2) Are handballs in the game?

Rutter: Handballs are not in the game. Handballs have never been in the game and probably won’t be for a number of years because they are an extremely difficult thing to get right in a videogame.

3) Is there a dummy pass button in the game?

Rutter: Yes there is. We have a fake shot, fake pass. While paring up your shot or lob pass you can quickly press the pass button before you release the pass or shot.

4) Is there going to be a way to keep shots low other than just using less power?

Rutter: We now have a finesse shot or a lace shot as some people call it. You can hold the right top trigger or RB1 to be able to place your shot more accurately.

5) Can we change PK kick direction up until the point we make contact with the ball?

Rutter: You can change the PK kick direction until you press the button but this is something we may look at in the future because it’s a great idea.

6) Are cup games played at the correct venues?

Rutter: Cup games are played at the correct venues where those venues exist in the game. So we have Wembley Stadium licensed in the game, for example. So for the finals they will be played there. For some competitions where we don’t own all of the correct licensed stadia we are not able to support them in the game.

7) Is the Africa Cup of Nations in the game?

Rutter: No.

8) Will there be a youth system or reserve squad?

Rutter: There are reserve players in some leagues and for some teams. So for example, all English Premiership teams have reserve squads but not all Lower Division clubs do.

9) If we loan out players, will they actually get better?

Rutter: Yes, all players improve when loaned out. However, if you loan out a really bad player to a high profile club they would not improve as much because they need to get games and playing time to improve. For example, a bad player loaned out to Man United might not get playing time and so he won’t improve noticeably. But a poor player on a more appropriate team will get more playing time and improve more appropriately.

10) Is there dynamic lighting?

Rutter: We do not have true dynamic lighting but we do have self shadowing. So if a player’s arm goes in front of light he’ll shadow on himself but all the lights are actually fixed in the stadiums in the game.

11) Are coaches in the game (even if generic), perhaps with specific tactical tendencies?

Rutter: Yes, although you can’t see them J They have a certain amount of tendencies although for some teams they are not exactly correct. What we are hoping to do is get feedback from fans and the community on their teams and how they think their teams should play using custom team tactics. And the more feedback we get the more we will apply it to the game to make sure that teams are appropriate.

12) Will there be a practice/free training mode outside of the 1 on 1 battles?

Rutter: No unfortunately not but we are thinking about this for the future. Right now the only available options to practice are inside the practice arena where you can practice free kicks and penalties, by activating them from the D-pad.

13) Is there pitch deterioration over the course of the season, and are pitches in general more poor for smaller leagues and for appropriate regions?

Rutter: We have different conditions on the pitch that are accurate geographically. So for Central or Southern America pitches will be drier and firmer and the ball will move faster along these surfaces. For areas more likely to be lush or wet we have a slightly different pitch.

14) Is there a create-a-team feature?

Rutter: You’ll have to check back with me after Leipzig when we will have some feature announcements that will address this question.

15) Can we save replays to the hard drive?

Rutter: You can not save replays to your hard drive but you can upload replays to www.easportsfootball.com and share them with your friends.

16) Has the fatigue system been changed at all this year?

Rutter: Yes, we have changed the fatigue system quite significantly. We really believe we have an accurate fatigue and recovery system now in place. You can really feel the difference towards the end of the half and late in games. Now it is far more important to use tactical substitutions within the game to keep your player fresh and your team in sync.

17) Have free kicks been changed/improved (ex. two men over the ball, weak foot over favored foot, etc.)?

Rutter: You can now call for a teammate to come short at corners, call for a free kick layoff man, use him to shoot, pass to him, get the wall him to shoot, get the wall to jump or get a man from the wall to rush the free kick. But we do not have favored foot. Sorry.

Nice! Reading now....

Great interview! It's also sounds like the fatigue system will be working well this year.

Unfortunately no handballs. I guess a good follow up would be why are they in the PC game then?

- No handballs and probably won't be for a number of years. This is extremely disappointing and like therizing mentioned they are in the PC version. (Perhaps this is something that could be asked at the Community day.)

- I don't know if he understood the dummy pass button question. It doesn't sound like it's in there though. (Maybe this is something that could be brought up at the community day too.)

- The finesse shot is not new, but it seems as if it is being presented as a new feature.

- We are still locked into the original PK direction selected, which means PKs will probably remain the same as 08. Not good. Right now the keepers have a great advantage during PKs because once the kick taker selects an area of the goal to shoot at he cannot change the shot direction. In other words, if the kicker chooses to place the ball in the top right corner and presses the shoot button, he is locked into shooting there, even if the keeper is all the way to the right. It's hard to explain, but I'm sure some of you guys know what I'm talking about.

- Cup games at correct venues is a plus.

- No Africa Cup of Nations in the game means players won't be missing during the appropriate times in manager mode.

- There are reserve players again, but no youth or reserve league.

- Loaned out players get better with appropriate teams. Still no word on whether or not we can check how well they're doing.

- Still no dynamic lighting. Not sure why. Most other EA sports games have it.

- As usual we can't see coaches in FIFA games, only WC and Euro games.

- No practice/free training. I still don't understand why this is so hard to implement.

- It sounds like there might be some sort of create-a-team feature, but we have to wait until Leipzig. Fingers crossed.

- Still no replays to the hard drive. Again, I don't get it.

- I really hope the fatigue system has been improved. This might not seem like much, but if it has been "changed significantly" then this is great news.

- The free kick system sounds much better, still not perfect but it sounds like it's getting there.

Agree on the fatigue system. YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!

# 5 bad_philanthropy @ 07/23/08 02:43 PM
So can we cautiously assume from this interview that the fatigue system will work properly and that cpu teams will actually alter their lineups in manager mode? I can't wait for this game.

Does anyone else find it disappointing the producer of FIFA doesn't understand what a dummy pass is? I can't remember what it was, but there was another soccer specific thing he didn't understand earlier too. This is like the producer of Madden not knowing what a Cover 2 defense is.

How hard is it to put a proper practice mode in, even if it's just free kicks and corners?

Nothing really new, and gotta love when old features get touted as new ones, even when they were in the game last year.

# 7 therizing02 @ 07/23/08 03:25 PM
My follow up questions from this interview...

If handballs are so hard to program why are they in the PC version?

Can you talk more about the Fatigue system. Specifically will CPU managers adjust lineups accordingly? During the game AND before.

Can we check on the progress of our loaned out players during the season?

Will players get called for International matches during MM?

It's good to hear about fatigue, but the handball thing is kinda a bummer. Like Therizing said, it's on the PC version. And the collision detection is phenominal on this game, how hard could it really be? The create-a-team stuff is probably gonna be like NHL. But that would be really cool if you could create yourself.

All in all a good article. But it still worries me that Man Mode hasn't really been mentioned as having any major work. It was functional, but buggie. And the PC version was much better. Still counting the days. The footage on the MLS capture video looks really good. Come on Lepzig! First gameplay footage then........

Bahnzo, the other thing you mentioned was 'quick restarts' to which he said [paraphrasing] "I'm not sure what you mean, we do have a quick rematch option for online play..." Rutter is a Brit, right? I'm hoping that these might be due to a language/terminology misunderstanding.

Overall, some good stuff, some disappointing stuff and more examples of answers that don't really answer the question...

# 10 drjohnnyboy @ 07/23/08 04:50 PM
He definately did not understand the "dummy pass" term

I am pleased to see they finally have added the free kick layoff man and dynamic wall, will make for some more interesting scenarios

# 11 luckyluchiano @ 07/23/08 06:15 PM
What about stat tracking throughout your manager mode...Why cant we see what is going on in all the leagues when the season is going on. You only meet in the CL league...What about Stat history and Trophy history like Madden. After the season I want to look at my accomplishments...I want to know how many goals I scored throughout my career..I want to look at my trophy case and see all my winnings...Why isnt the Santiago Bernebaeu in the game??

# 12 thegoons21 @ 07/23/08 07:29 PM
Yeah, he either didn't understand the questions, skated around them, or the questions themselves weren't specific enough. Hopefully for community day you guys will get specifics.

In regards to loaned players, my big thing is yaaay they'll get better but will we actually see them get put in the starting 11? Still no mention if they've put in best 11 feature for MM.

Everything else is gravy.

Excuse my naivete, but what is a “dummy pass?”

Can’t wait to see some extensive gameplay footage and more manager mode info.

When a player acts as if he is going to receive a pass, but instead lets it run through.

If there's a part 3 can someone ask if they took out the Estadio de los Artes? I also agree the loan system needs to be fixed.

Exboxur is right in regards to what the question was asking, but I can see where Rutter may have misunderstood. The term 'dummy pass' could be misconstrued (as Rutter did) to mean a 'fake pass' as I believe the word is used in that manner at times in the British vernacular. Although I think that would be usually be called a 'feint-pass' so I could be wrong, of course...

The funny part is that the animation for faking the reception of a pass & allowing it to roll through into space (clumsy I know, but in the interest of clarity) IS in 08, but I have no idea how to trigger it (happens infrequently, but I've definitely seen it). Since a lot of us played the WE series, we remember being able to do this with that control scheme by holding one of the shoulder buttons as the pass approached and would like to have the option to do so manually in FIFA. It could prove very useful to combat the ever popular tactic of charging defenders at the pass receiver, although improved player responsiveness & first-touch control could help immensely in those situations as well...

That is a staple of EA's next-gen games.

"New for 2009, but don't tell anyone this was in 2006"
