Early Impressions of MLB The Show 17

As it is with the dawn of every baseball season, the launch of the newest MLB The Show game brings about the usual sources of excitement that we’ve come to expect over the years from playing the series: a bunch of new and promising features waiting to be explored, loads of welcome tweaks to an already solid core of gameplay and — of course — a flurry of people logging on at midnight when the game's officially released, causing the overwhelmed servers to quickly become unstable.

Okay, that last one is probably more of a continued source of frustration than excitement, but at least we can say the servers have been a little better than they were last year.

With only limited time to play the game since its release on Tuesday, here are a few stray observations on what has stood out to me so far, besides the inconsistent online gameplay:

The Intro

MLB The Show 17 has an absolutely stellar introduction that uses chalk on a scoreboard to explore the history of the game. From the opening sounds of Vin Scully to the infamous Bill Buckner botched play to the Blue Jays walk-off World Series victory all the way up to the Cubs finally winning it all last year, a rich tapestry of classic baseball moments are woven together in a spine-tingling and surprisingly emotional initiation that leaves you especially amped to take the field and start playing ball.

Ball Physics and Humanity AI

The highlight of my short time playing the game so far has been these two nifty upgrades, offering more realism in the form of ball physics and increased awareness from the AI. Each time the bat is put on the ball and you watch as it spins and slices in ways the series hasn’t seen before, it’s clear that a lot of development time has been spent trying to replicate all of the unpredictable contact that can happen in real life. Similarly, the days of being frustrated at how long a fielder takes in getting the ball to a base or even back into the infield appear to be over. This is thanks to a new humanity AI system that sees fielders deliver the ball with a required sense of urgency when speedy runners are on the base-paths or, in case of a routine play, with an appropriately lackadaisical or carefree air.

Presentation

Every year, the first thing I love to do with the new MLB The Show game is play a nice and slow game in broadcast mode while skipping as little as possible, just to see all the new camera angles and little details that have been added to make the game feel as immersive as possible. With its updated player models, crisper animations and MLB Network-style production values, it’s hard to find much to fault about how gorgeous the game looks (aside from the occasional dip in frame-rate amongst some of its transitions).

Commentary

The addition of Dan Plesac and Harold Reynolds to the MLB The Show booth may provide an opportunity to showcase some new voices, but it also reveals they may still have a ways to go. For one thing, it only takes playing a couple of games before you start hearing Plesac and Reynolds repeating the same phrases and anecdotes. This issue is exacerbated by the fact that, unlike Matt Vasgersian’s short and sweet play-by-play, their commentary often rambles on for a bit and it’s not uncommon for some of their banter to continue long past it being relevant to the action on the field.

Road to the Show

The jury is still out for me at the moment on whether the additional options in Road to the Show really bring anything substantial to the mode. Yes, it's kind of fun to get to choose what our created player says throughout his development, but it doesn't appear to alter the familiar trajectory of his career all that much. Also, the awkward documentary framework hasn't done much (at least in the early going) to successfully dramatize all the same old decisions a young ballplayer must make on his way to the big leagues.

I wont play a lot of retro, maybe once every other saturday, but thats still a hella lot more than I'm gonna spend playing online. and even if sds spent an entire year working on retro mode, thats their business, they've earned the right to push this game in the direction they choose.
if I dont like that direction, I'm free to jump ship at anytime, nobodys making me play it.

Gameplay is fantastic, it's like a whole new game, which is so rarely the case in these annual sports games. The difference in ball physics is just ridiculous, the hits are so much more unpredictable and I love it. I can't wait to start my franchise just on the basis of how much the gameplay has improved. Don't really care about commentary, I tend to play music and just have game sounds, but it's nice to have some new voices, even if one of them barely speaks and when he does it tends to be to say something wrong.

Outside of the game, less impressive. Servers not working is just embarrassing, no idea how they can spend so much time and effort promoting a game, only to let themselves down by having an unplayable game. It wouldn't be such an issue if everything on this game is pretty much linked to online in some way.

Franchise has a fresh coat of paint and not a whole lot else. The weekly budget seemed like a nice idea, but makes no sense at all when I have to pay people annual contracts. So easily fixed by giving the option to see your annual budget and payroll, but for some reason you can't. Pretty disappointed the Franchise missions turned out to just essentially be a tutorial instead of actual long term missions and rewards.

DD has a lot of new stuff going on, which it's hard to really assess when the servers aren't working but they look interesting. A huge disappointment is how every program of long missions cannot be completed without playing online, a lot. I don't have PS+ and frankly don't want it, but I feel I'm being restricted from a lot of the best content because of it. (not the playing online, the rewards for the interesting programs)

RTTS seems much the same, but with a few extra animations and multiple choice questions. This should get more interesting as I go, but the core gameplay seems largely the same. (which is probably right, as it was pretty spot on already) The mode has some serous potential going forwards, very promising.

The gameplay alone is blowing me away, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed in the direction the rest of the game has taken this year.

Yeah, just change the Presentation options.

I personally have it set at Broadcast because I want the presentation to feel as much like a real MLB broadcast as possible.

IMHO it's a very nice game (ball physics are perfect and new animations are really cool) . But if you want to play all timers, old teams, simulate legends game... That kind of experience is not allowed to all timers fan like me (and I am not alone, we are a lot for sure).

There's is my short list of things that can improve this game a lot and that aren't hard to do:

- All the brands you want. You cannot pay the rights? don't worry, editable logos then. Pro Evolution Soccer has had this feature since its very beginning, so it cannot be so hard.

- Editable helmets... In MLB 17 (13, 14, 15 and 16 too) everyone has to play with the same model (I know... except you create a player). What is the reason you aren't fixing this bug yet? Less immersive aspect of the game.

-Retired numbers c'mon! I want to simulate! ie: his name is Hank Aaron, plays for the Braves, #45... why...? Let's do it ala MLB 12 The Show, where you could use the retired number for simulations, where name and lastname matched.

- Some quirks must be editable (day/night, pickoff, etc)

- Classic uniforms. The addition of the classic alternate green A's jersey, the O's cap with the entire oriole, the Astros uniform from the 1990's, Expos unis... Brooklyn Dodgers, Milwaukee Braves... would be awesome.

- Audios for names/lastnames. Where are Yastremzki, Ichiro, Ripken, Mazeroski, etc?

- Suggestion: Editable text or awards for each player to be shown. MVP, CYA, GG, SS... etc. It's nice to read it when batter comes at bat or when introducing field positions.

I couldn't agree more about the above mentioned helmet issue as well as retired numbers. I only play with classics rosters and hate seeing Graig Nettles not #9 or Bernie Carbo not #1.

Good list of things Atomo. Gameplay is still amazing and even better with ball physics but nothing else is getting me excited so far. Franchise mode is a big let down for me.

Been saying this for years. Nettles was my fave player as a kid. I create him every year and have to give him like #99. If you's have to tie it to the specific player i.e. Babe Ruth is #3, you couldn't do Nettles. #9 is Maris. They might have retired it again ala #8, until that book came out.
Oh well.

# 28 Ebpmd @ 03/30/17 12:22 PM
Why not prevent current players from wearing retired numbers but allow them for created players? Then current rosters would adhere to the retired numbers while we would still be able to use them for the classic rosters. Or fir each teams retired numbers have a list of the 5 or so top players to wear that number and allow a created player with one of those names to wear that number. I'm trying to understand the reasoning behind not allowing the use of retired numbers? If they don't want a current Yankee to wear #9 why would they want Nettlrs to wear anything but #9? It is a game, allow us to have fun with it! Baseball above all other games is a game of history, allow us to accurately recreate baseballs history. That includes jersey numbers, jerseys, division/league alignment, ballparks and playoff format. NBA2k does a nice job of that. I'm hoping one day MLB will expand upon that? Classic rosters are about immersion into that season/era. Just give us the tools to recreate it. We'll do the rest.

Just a thought regarding retired numbers??? Why not prevent rosters with retired numbers from being uploaded and shared... but allow individuals the option of changing the numbers and using retired numbers for offline play? So then if I choose to make Nettles #9 for my offline created roster/season... no one knows?

Quick manage is much better then fast forward, fast forward was to fast to jump in

That a great improvement.

Do you guys think the ball looks almost transparent at times?

Game is great so far, ball physics are the best I've ever seen in a baseball game. Human AI is decent, but honestly I'm almost seeing too many mistakes by the AI. In my small sample size I've only had a double play turned against me when the ball is hit to first base. Anything hit to 2nd or short never gets turned. Loving the pitching decisions by the AI though. All in all it's the best game of the series.

# 33 Juzbee @ 03/30/17 11:25 PM
I only play franchise.

If they would have added the new ball physics, increased frame rate, and animations and left everything else the same as MLB 16, I'd be a very happy camper. The sound is just nowhere near as good, and I am surprised at what a big deal it is when playing. Last year (once I upped the volume on all of my MP3's) everything music-wise in game sounded GREAT. Now, the bass seems to be missing from walk-up and pitcher entrance music. I am wondering if I have ultra-sensitive ears or something, because I seem to be the only person who thinks that the game sounds terrible. :P

Also, have to mention the new commentary. It's very much improved, except for volume issues. Matt V's volume varies from one line to the next. Dan Plesac sounds good most of the time, but when you hit a home run, you can't hear a word he's saying. It's just so inconsistent.

Lastly, the new classic stadiums. Love them.

News flash all video games commentary is repetative, there are no exceptions. To point that out as flaw is... People point to NBA 2K and that game repeats the same lines all the time, and it doesn't take a 2nd game, it repeats the next play the next quarter ect... I don't get this so called dig at The Show that does what all sports game does. It's a dumb point and it's meaningless, just a talking point for people who think there is something better and it is not.

I would say you made an impetuous statement, but have to agree.

It's interesting that the author chose to frame the server problem on a "flurry" of gamers "logging on at midnight." As if they should have all waited until they got the all clear and logged on like gentlemen, or that SDS had everything set up perfectly but it's those unruly gamers who upset the apple cart.

Come on, not even a mild reproach for the Man? Wouldn't it be worthwhile to let your readers know - especially those thinking about buying it to play online - that those server issues are worse than ever? Can't strain those cozy relationships I guess.

I don't know a whole lot about programming and video game development, but I can't imagine Retro Mode taking up enough space that would prevent more equipment, uniforms, or other things to be added.

Retro Mode is basically just different camera angles, a few gameplay/visual/audio wrinkles, and a different control scheme.

Very similar feelings. If that intro doesn't put a lump in your throat you're not a baseball fan. (LOL I"m old enough to remember watching Aaron's 715 when it happened so that really grabbed my attention.

Agree. CAPs still look like CAPS. You can still easily tell who is a CAP and who is face scanned. Ramone said it would be harder to tell the difference this year. Lol. That said, Mo makes some good CAPs.

GAme is amazing, wow, now this is what I expected when I moved to next gen. Best Sports game ever made imo. RTTS is amazing.
