PES 2017: Another Successful Release in the Books

It's no secret that PES 2017 was released to great acclaim this year, building upon previous iterations to provide a soccer simulation that not only rivaled its biggest competitor, but arguably surpassed it.

If you've been following PES' progression in recent years, you'll know the markings have been on the wall for years now. The introduction of the Fox engine marked an upward turn in fortunes for the series, and although its sales figures might still be dwindling in certain parts of the world, it's finally being taken seriously by fans of the sport once more.

I'm going to use this year-end opportunity to discuss why PES 2017 is such a dramatic improvement over its predecessor. Like others, I came into 2016 with only a moderate interest in rekindling my love affair with the PES series, but I'm coming out of it with an intense appreciation for the latest release. Here's what PES 2017 got particularly right this year.

Goalkeepers

For the most part, PES 2017's goalkeepers are outstanding. It's true they struggle when rushing out to the ball, but in almost any other scenario, their actions mirror a realistic approach. Most importantly, it's easy to feel confident in a goalkeeper's ability to make crucial saves, even in quick-fire succession. The difference in quality between this year's goalkeepers and last year's is monumentally vast, and it's an overhaul the the PES series was desperately crying out for.

Adaptive AI

Many of us at Operation Sports enjoy investing our time in franchise modes, and Master League is that mode of choice in PES 2017. While it actually suffers in a handful of ways behind the scenes, its compelling nature is adopted from the new Adaptive AI gameplay feature of this year's edition. Now, teams intelligently adapt their tactics to suit their needs in the midst of a game. It's not only noticeable, but there's such variation to this system that you're also forced to adapt in the process, replicating the tactical chess game that is a 90-minute soccer match.

Fluid Gameplay

The introduction of the Fox engine back in late 2013 wasn't met with universal praise by all. While many fans recognized the significant improvement it added to the series, criticisms regarding reaction times and a lack of fluidity also followed. At times, PES began to feel more like a scripted sequence of events than an accurate representation of soccer. Last year rectified this issue to a great degree, but this year, the effects are even more substantial. Now, the rigid nature of previous iterations has largely disappeared, with improvements being made to passing, player reactions and contextual animations.

Option Files

The switch from last-gen to current-gen caused all sorts of problems for a wide variety of sports series. PES was no different, eliminating the ability to download kits, team names and other cosmetic aspects with ease. This was a major issue for some, particularly due to the series' infamous lack of official licensing. While last year took steps to eliminate this issue with image importing, PES 2017 makes it much easier to share and import creators' option files. This feature only exists on PS4 and PC as of now, and we're hopeful it won't stay that way for long.

Of course, PES 2017 doesn't get everything right. It's still got a long way to go in terms of presentation, and even the action on the pitch isn't perfect, with aspects like player switching causing occasional issues. But, it can't be denied that a significant improvement has been made over the course of 12 months, and whether you're an avid soccer fan or a casual supporter, you should be excited if PES 2017 makes its way into your (oddly shaped) Christmas stocking this year.

What are your thoughts on PES 2017? Let us know.

Great read. It's going to be awesome seeing how far PES pushes the AI and animations that are always spot on contextually. I really hope BAL gets attention, and ML continues its improvements. One thing that would go a long way for me is getting rid of bringing back retired players as youth players. It's soccer, the amount of potential unique players from the names to the playing styles down all the way to the player skills should be enough to have generic players...like other sports games.

Yeah, I think Master League's handling of regenerative players is its biggest weakness. It's definitely something that needs to be worked on for those who like to adopt multi-season saves.

Transfers in general still need work, too. They're better, but I find loans to be a bit overpowered. It's easy to loan 6-7 top-quality players for the same price as buying one top-quality player outright.

I'm still having a blast with Master League this year, though. PES hasn't been this much fun since the PS2 era.

Definitely having a blast as well in Master League. I agree with transfers also needing to be fixed. I find it really easy in general to build up my team. The gameplay is what has me hooked in the mode for sure.

I could never get any of the option files I downloaded installed correctly. I hoped that the PES team would make an online, in-game sharing system, instead of one where we have to download the file to a computer and have everything just so for it to all line up right.

I would like to see more fouls and a clock that only slows to real time and does not stop too.

Otherwise, the matches I did play felt really good and true to the sport. Master League is always a lot of fun too for us Franchise-centric players.

Tried PES game for the first time this year and as a person who is only interested in the Career mode BAL I gave it a go for a while but uninstalled it as I could not get past the having to sit and watch over a half a game in fast forward before I was subbed on.

I don't have a problem with only playing in the second half as a rook as that is what it should be but it should have a option to fast forward you straight to that point, not make me watch it, it was tedious at first but in the end I just gave up in disgust.

Will keep a eye on future releases and will be happy to buy when it gets fixed but until then I am done

Yeah, that's how you know they didn't touch BAL from last year because the ability to skip ahead to when you're actually on the field is a common sense addition that has to be made.
It's things like that in modes where PES shows its age.

Unfortunately, you'll never see something like that, because it makes it too easy for Konami to circumvent the licensing chokehold that FIFA spends so much to keep every year.

That said, it kills me how Konami continues to step on the toes of the editors. I love the idea of Live Updates, but there has to be a way that you can apply them without ruining your edit data, including tactics, etc.

I haven't poured this much time into a football game since FIFA 98. I still hear that Blur song and my finest football memories come flooding back. I had another brief foray around 2002 with FIFA on the PC, but until PES17 I haven't played a full Season. I tried a couple times with FIFA 2005ish and even last year with PES16.

The amount of yelling and fist-pumping I do while playing PES rivals my college time spent with FIFA 98 or if we cross sports games maybe NHLPA 94 or NHL 98. There's just a large amount of excitement and unique moments I've generated with this game that I love. I'm so happy to have this game.

Have you tried playing with Division 2 teams? I only play BAL mode and chose to start in the Italian 2nd Division. Even during my first season, I got picked in the starting line up for most matches and only occasionally found myself on the bench having to fast forward.

I had briefly tried starting in the EPL but found myself on the bench nearly every match, so didn't stick at it for long because, as you mention, the ability to skip straight to the point you come on is sadly absent.

Actually that is probly what I should of done, might re-install and plug the thumb drive in and redo the teams and players and start in a 2nd division of the Spanish league and see how that goes

Well I redid everything and started in the 2nd division of the Italian league, much better this time as I had the first few games sitting for the 1st half then coming on but then went to starting halfway through the first half and now start regularly and am enjoying it.

Aim to eventually get up into the 1st division with Juventus or Inter and then eventually across to Liverpool

Good to hear you're enjoying it.

I'm just coming to the end of my first BAL season in the Italian 2nd Division and we've now won the league with a couple of matches to go. Really enjoyed the season because the team plays properly and doesn't rely on you to do everything. They scored plenty of great goals which I wasn't involved in, which was gratifying.

My primary position is supposed to be DMF but for some reason, I was largely picked at LB for the majority of the season. I decided just to go with it and gradually enjoyed it more and more as I improved my play in that role. At first, I would get caught out watching my teammates attacking moves and not pay close enough attention to my own positioning, so the opposition would sometimes quickly counter and catch me out of position. Some matches I could tell they were targetting me, with the majority of their play coming down my side. But I gradually learned to to keep my concentration and took pride in pre-empting their counter attacks and cutting them out quickly.

Towards the end of the season, I started to get picked more often as a central AMF, so was beginning to learn how to best play that role in the formation of my team, helping to link up play from midfield to attack, learning the sort of through-balls my attacking team-mates would best respond to around the box to create chances - it was great to see some of their stylish finishes. I even scored 3 or 4 goals myself, although my shooting accuracy has plenty of room for improvement.

I haven't enjoyed a football game so much since....well actually, since FIFA16, which I thought was the best FIFA to date. Unfortunately, FIFA17 just feels wrong but if EA can get the single player game back on track, and PES keeps improving, we could have 2 very good football games this autumn.
