FIFA 17: Reviewer First Impressions

If you're a keen FIFA fan, you've probably started to notice the FIFA 17 reviews trickling in. I've had a lot of time with the game so far, but we're going to hold back on our review temporarily for a couple of reasons. First, a patch has just been released containing a number of pre-release fixes. Also, I want to get more time in an online setting before summing up my thoughts.

We'll be unveiling our review as soon as we can, but in the meantime, I'm going to take this chance to sum up my initial impressions of this year's game.

-FIFA 17 has enhanced the series' gameplay in a variety of ways. There are a bunch of new headline features that largely serve to improve this year's offerings, but it's the subtleties that shine brightest by merging to create a wonderfully authentic offline experience. Games play out in a more realistic fashion than ever, with only a few downsides to note. I haven't had much experience with online gameplay at this point, but it already feels much more arcade-like than its offline counterpart.

-The Frostbite engine has transformed FIFA's presentation this year. It's most notable in terms of the game's lighting, where stadiums glisten in the sun and sweat beams off players' faces. It isn't perfect, however, with some areas suffering from a lack of detail.

-The Journey has arrived, and it delivers a brand-new experience that will eat up your time and keep you invested for the long haul. It's an excellent story mode that incorporates a well delivered tale, engaging cutscenes and immersive gameplay. The way in which you perform and the decisions you make will affect the story, but it's designed to follow a specific outline throughout. Let it take you along for the ride, and you'll have a lot of fun.

-Those who spend the majority of their time in career mode might be disappointed to hear it's largely the same. There have been improvements in the form of new features centered around aspects like team objectives and financial matters, but it's mostly a familiar experience for anyone who played it last year. Ultimate Team has been upgraded considerably with the introduction of Squad Builder Challenges, and they're an excellent addition that should enhance the appeal of Ultimate Team going forward.

This is just a small taste of what's to come in the final review, and keep in mind that these are not final impressions -- they may change. The EA Access trial period is now rolling out, so let us know your thoughts on what you've played so far.

Does anyone know whether there is a single player career mode that isn't "The Journey?" Every review I've read has been skewed toward "The Journey" but lacked mention of an alternative single player career mode.

Is there a patch notes for this patch anywhere? I've been trying to find it, but I'm not having any luck.

I think it needs to be noted that there virtually no new player face scans this year. There should also be some concern with the addition of only one new league and one new stadium outside of two in England. Couple this with many things fans have asked for (improved player editing, the ability to create a team or league for kick off or career mode) being neglected or completely ignored, and many long time FIFA players are feeling much less enthusiastic about this game than your average reviewer. While I'm sure review scores won't be lower than 8 of 10, many of us rate this years effort a 3 or 4 out of ten.

Yes, Career Mode contains the ability to play as a manager or as a single player.

When I try to read the article in the OP, I get an error that says the content is private and I'm prompted to log in to a web server. Very odd.

Thanks Fraser. First Impressions are helpful, and I'm sure we are all looking forward to a full review.

Its because the link posted is for the admin section of the site. And not a user visible page.

Interesting how the OS review of PES was published more than a week after the game was released while for Fifa, that is still one week away, there's already a pre-review...

Lol! Nah. I mean did you enter your login info to see if it worked? I get paranoid when stuff changes and asks me for things.

Probably because FIFA has early access and PES did not.

Not sure which footy game to get this year. My biggest problem with EA games in general is when I figure out how to beat the AI, it's impossible to lose unless the game decides to absolutely cheese you. FIFA has always been good at that... The players will be unstoppable and score some ridiculous goal. I enjoyed PES last year but it seemed every game would end 5-3 or 5-4. I'm interested to see which one scores higher on average this year.

Can we inundate this thread with only first impressions of FIFA 17, please

I wish they had added to management side and add youth teams/reserve teams. I'd love that.

It'll still be the deepest player management mode we have had on any system in soccer game.

I pretty much answer the same question every year, and it's always impossible to get an answer to it.
1 player career,is your contract in a certain amount of years this time?
Or does it just go on and on without having the chance to be a free agent,or more possibilities to influence your future?

2 to me realism is important, and only having one game suspension for a straight red card in The English league system isn't.
Any news on that?
Thanks

Can anyone who's played the game tell me whether they've brought back full 11 v 11 practice mode? Still can't for the life of me figure out why it would have been taken out.

Nope, only the 1v1 area mode exists again, no ability yet again to properly practice.
