The Impact of the J1 League in FIFA

Last week EA released a news statement stating the J1 League, Japan’s top flight soccer league, would be featured in FIFA 17. On the surface it’s not surprising seeing as EA has been adding more and more licensed leagues to its FIFA franchise for the past few years. In typical OS fashion, let’s dive a little deeper to see what impact, if any, this has on consumers.

Japan has long been a PES stronghold dating back to the game’s roots. With its headquarters in Japan, Konami has released two separate games; one exclusively for its Japanese compatriots featuring the J1-League and another game for the rest of the world. This dual-release model always sparked a bit of discussion as there really was no need for two unique releases where one could be adequate. There are a few valid reasons behind this approach, namely the inclusion of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League which is on a different schedule from their European counterparts. While the J1 isn’t as popular as the Chinese Super League and their influx of cash, the addition adds more teams in Asia and takes us one step towards an official AFC.

The ramifications of this inclusion go beyond adding another league as this takes FIFA one step closer towards world domination, specifically in the licensing department. With most of Europe’s top leagues wrapped up, Asia and South America remain the last two holdouts. While PES currently has the upper hand in South America(notably Copa Liberatadores) the gap is narrowing as EA currently has partial rights (players, clubs or a combination of both) to the domestic leagues of Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Colombia. As the popularity of FIFA’s Ultimate Team continues to rise (barring this week’s team chemistry discovery) the appeal of licensing and EA’s deep pockets could see an increase in the amount of clubs available to use in FIFA 17 and beyond.

With the inclusion of Japan’s top flight, are you more likely to venture outside of Europe’s top traditional leagues?

Wonder if there will be Japanese commentators?

I want those Icelandic commentators that went crazy.

Let's just hope they get rid of Alan Smith. One of the poorest commentators going. Niall Quinn another to dodge. Gutted they didn't get Gary Neville involved when he was at Sky.

In my opinion the more commentary teams you can use the better.

Back On topic - adding more leagues is great to me. More options to play and more areas to scout and sign from.

This hurts PES because Japan is their yard, and not being able to get their own country's version of MLS into its game is devastating, frankly. And quite frankly, will it be the death knell for PES as a whole?

I don't get how Konami could let this happen. Is This exclusive, as in the league won't be in Winning Eleven any more?

I don't think its exclusive and maybe this lets Konami know that there's a market for J1 outside of Japan and they include it in the worldwide release as well. I really don't care for the league but as someone mentioned, it gives you another league to recruit talent for your career mode or master league.

Yeah I searched all over the internet for information about whether or not it was exclusive and couldn't find anything. I doubt it's exclusive but it has to hurt Konami.

I do realize that out-of-the-box licenses mean a lot to a lot of people, but at this point Konami are fighting a war they can't win. They should consider ditching licenses altogether and focus on extremely detailed and in-depth customization options, much like the Fire Pro Wrestling series. I mean, does one licensed EPL team really mean anything? Just say screw it, give up the licenses but give us the option to recreate as many leagues, teams, players and stadiums as possible within hard drive allocation. They're already on the right track, they just need to go further with it.

P.S.: And oh yeah, make sure that PES' gameplay is better than anything else on the planet. That's something no one can take away from them.

I tend to start in MLS and work my way over to Europe. The mode starts a few months earlier that way too.

So is it safe to say, in career mode, you can use J-LEAGUE teams to play AFC Champion Cup against other top asian teams in asia like australia korea etc??

EA needs to hire Jon Kabira as the Japanese commentator.

Nope there is no Champions League besides Europe that I know in game.
No Asian or Concacaf Champions League now doubt they would put resources outside Europe Leagues especially BPL as they get managers, all stadiums, presentations and now the new Pro Career/Story you can only play in EPL..

EA also has a fake Copa Libertadores in the game. They call it Copa Latin America. It's the South American Leagues and Liga MX (Mexico). I really wish EA would include MLS in this tournament, so there's some kind of fake Champions League for USA/Canada clubs.
