I miss the NBA that I grew up with.

If that intro gets your blood pumping for NBA Basketball, then this blog is for you. I was born in 1981 so my fondest memories of the NBA are in the 1990s. From the early 90s Pistons and Lakers teams to the Bulls domination of the mid 90s. The famously boring Rockets/Knicks finals in the 94-95 season.

From the Orlando Magic and my home team, the Charlotte Hornets exciting teams of the mid 90s to the Bulls and Jazz in 1998.

For me, the decade of the 90s was the pinnacle of NBA basketball on television and for style of basketball that I enjoyed watching. I still watch the game today, but in my older age (27) I don't find it nearly as appealing.

When I think of the 90s NBA I think of the Mega-Stars.

Isiah Thomas
Magic Johnson
Dominique Wilkins
Tim Hardaway
Karl Malone
Hakeem Olajuwon
David Robinson
Charles Barkley
Patrick Ewing
Shawn Kemp
Larry Johnson (pre-back surgery)

I could go on obviously ... but even the role players of the 90s stick out in my mind. Sedale Threatt, James Edwards, Vinnie Johnson, Horace Grant, Wayman Tisdale, Jerome Kersey, Dell Curry, etc.

I just have a love for that era of NBA Basketball and while I know I'm not alone, I wonder a lot of times if it keeps me from enjoying the game of today as much as I could.

As I type this I'm watching the Blazers @ Heat play on ESPN, or more like listening to it behind me. I recognize the great players of today, but I don't get the same enjoyment from the game as I did in the 1990s.

I totally feel ya on this one. Today's game has become one in which they don't call any of the technical calls (traveling, palming, ect) yet call a bunch of ticky tack bs fouls, yet let Shaq man handle everyone. The game is just no where close to the 90's. Hell the X-man was better then most of these punks.

No doubt the 90s were the pinnacle, but that shouldn't stop you from enjoying today's NBA, we are seeing one of the greatest influxes of young talent in quite some time.

A lot of connect comes from childhood though, no doubt. I was born in 1987 and remember EVERY holiday, sitting next to my dad watching the NBA on NBC and some combo of the Pacers/Knicks/Bulls.

NBA basketball is as good as it has been in such a long time. '90s basketball is boring in comparison to the stuff you see today I think. Early '90s basketball became painful to watch post-Lakers and Celts.

I still watch the occasional game (usually Raptors/playoffs) but the passion for the game that I once had is gone. I truly miss the days when NBC broadcasted the games. I don't know what it was but the overall presentation was a lot better, not to mention the game being a lot tougher with a ton of legit great talent on the floor.

That's not to say there aren't great talents today because there is but maybe it's age and nostalgia that gets to me because I just don't like the game as much today.

I lost my passion for watching basketball as well. I'm not sure if it's not playing basketball anymore like I did in high school or what. The boring pick and roll era of the late 1990s made it boring and just haven't really got back in.
