Where do the Cleveland Browns go from here?
Posted on December 2, 2008 at 06:57 PM.
I'm 36 years old and have followed the Browns since a child. I wont bore you with the stories of heartache...and there are many to share from the Kardiac Kids to the Kosar days. I watched my team leave town because we had the only owner that could not make money owning a franchise. I was elated when they came back only to watch the NFL force us to field a team and organization in much less time than the Panthers or Jaguars were given and it shows to this day. There is plenty of blame to go around but at this point something has to give. The fans are fed up and the worst in the Browns fans has been been on display over the years from bottle gate to Derek Anderson getting booed off the field after an injury last Sunday. The Romeo Crennel era is about to end. I like Romeo and believe he has a kind heart and is a good man. I never thought he should have been the choice to coach this team. The team is soft and they are lacking killer instinct. This team is about to embark on the most important choice since returning in 1999. I believe if this choice fails Randy Lerner will sell the team. So what do the Browns do? I believe the first choice is Bill Cowher if he wants to return to the NFL. Bill has ties to Cleveland from a being a player and coach here. Rumors are rampant that the Cowhers have purchased a home in the suburb of Strongsville. This could be false and he could decide to stay away from the NFL or Cleveland for that matter. When you get past Cowher the choices are many. Urban Meyer a native of N.E. Ohio is a possibility, Bob Stoops a native of Youngstown is a possibility, Jim Tressel a native of Berea is a possibility as is Kirk Ferentz who has ties to Phil Savage if he makes it though this with a job. Do the Browns go experienced with a Marty Schottenheimer or go young with a Steve Spagnola? These are tough questions with no easy answers....If Cowher says no to the Browns they will once again be going down a list of possible candidates that are not the first choice of the Browns. We have been down that road before. The bottom line is the city of Cleveland and Browns fans deserve better.

if the Browns don't get Cowher, their best bet would be to go with a young coordinator. Stay away from college coaches at all costs; when is the last time that worked out? You guys already tried it with Butch Davis, with awesome results.

I hope Cowher doesn't go to the Browns. What a betreyal that'd be to my favorite team (Steelers, obviously). I know he's from around there, but once you win a Superbowl with the Steelers and you had as much of an impact as he's had, there's no coaching for the Clowns, I mean Browns.

Agreed, Crennel is out like Aiken, but I'm not putting all my hopes in the Cowher basket. With the abundance of talent on this team (starting with your man Joshua "MtV" Cribbs), just about any coach with some semblance of structure and discipline should be able to come into 2009 and respond to a weakened schedule with positive results.

Should.

*Hmmmph*

Just remember, even Romeo was able to get 10 wins out of these guys.

Yup... when in doubt the coach has to go. I would look at moving Lewis too and getting some draft picks to fix the Defense!
